Lacking education is prison without the bars

Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 05/06/2015

» The mass arrest of young motorcycle racers in Bangkok earlier this week once again put the issue of parental responsibility into the public spotlight. Whenever minors commit crimes, parents are suddenly left being held to account. Not friends. Not schools. Parents alone.

Has reform failed, or has it even begun?

News, Atiya Achakulwisut, Published on 23/06/2015

» Maybe it's the natural swing of the pendulum — what goes up must come down — and that explains why we have gone from fight-to-the-death battles against inequality a few years ago, to high-minded campaigns for national reform last year, to struggles against overpriced lotteries, motorcycle racers and the age-old question of whether casinos should be allowed to operate legally in Thailand now.

Pedestrians, keep calm and be mindful

News, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 29/11/2018

» Readers from most countries would probably have been shocked by the recent story of a teenage girl in Bangkok who was knocked down while walking along a footpath by a speeding motorcycle.

    Double-edged sword called Section 44

News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 06/03/2017

» At first, the interim charter's Section 44 appears like a hidden sword that a knight in shining armour brings out only to fight a justifiable cause. Indeed, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha makes us believe so. Power and force will be used when necessary and applied constructively, we are told.

» The carnage on Thailand's roads, ranked the second deadliest in the world in 2015, is driven by a wide range of factors. In a bid to lessen the horrific slaughter and improve road safety, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) recently came up with a harsh solution, aimed at keeping unlicensed drivers off the roads.

Chao Phraya boat sinking was avoidable

News, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 21/09/2016

» I was shocked as I read the tragic news stories about how a double-decker tourist boat, that was supposed to take more than 100 Muslim pilgrims on a pilgrimage, ended up taking at least 27 lives when it capsized and sank on the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya on Sunday.

    Business fights and disabled rights

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 29/01/2016

» A labour report last week stating that more than 40 local firms were being taken to task by the law for declining to assist the disabled got me concerned over the lack of empathy some entrepreneurs have towards one of the most marginalised groups in society. The report went on to say assets of 44 companies could be foreclosed and sold to raise money, which would go into the Disabled Works Fund because the businesses in question refused to contribute to the fund, set up to raise the quality of life of the disabled in Thailand. The firms were warned to pay up but refused.

    Police need image makeover

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 23/10/2015

» The utter mayhem that unfolded a few weeks ago in the vicinity of Phuket's Thalang police station between officers and disgruntled residents who accused them of causing the death of two young drug suspects saw the type of carnage we have not seen in a while.
