The return of royal khon

» The wait is over for the return of the annual khon masked dance. The much-loved performance by the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (Support Foundation) of HM Queen Sirikit under the Reign of King Rama IX will make a comeback at the Thailand Cultural Centre from Nov 3 until Dec 5, this time featuring an episode called The Allegiance Of Phiphek.

However, the nearby Si Bua Thong Handicraft Centre in Ang Thong province is also worth a visit because you will be able to see the embroidery of khon mask dance costumes, the production of the rare pha yok (traditional silk brocades) and khon masks for the annual Royal Khon Performance there.

This year's instalment is a hugely enjoyable production of The Allegiance Of Phiphek episode from the Ramakien. The acting, dancing, costumes and props are as impressive as ever. And while the production may be restricted to a slightly more economical setting, this has been compensated for with funnier dialogue, including plenty of satirical gags riffing on current events.

» On Arkas mountain in a dark forest full of naga (serpents) and other poisonous creatures, monkey warrior Champhuwaraj, disguised as a big black bear, storms a pavilion inside Rothan Hollow. In there he interrupts Intorachit, son of the demon King Thotsakan, during a ritual of soaking his arrow in the pool of naga venom.
