In the case of Indonesian traditional textile batik, this message is explicit, as patterns and motifs often tell the story of the wearer -- his or her geographical origin, family history and social status. The iconic garment piece, which reached national-symbol status for Indonesia, is currently the object of, and point of departure for, the exhibition "POLA - Patterns Of Meaning" at the Jim Thompson Art Centre.
