New setbacks in the South

» It has been another bad week for the government in the deep South. Separatists are believed to be behind a vicious bombing attack that killed a five-year-old schoolgirl, her father and another bystander. It shocked the nation and drew outrage from around the world. Another bomb blew apart a railway car and stopped all rail traffic between southern Thailand and Malaysia. Then, men claiming to represent the bombers, told the press they were trying to sabotage efforts to negotiate peace in the violent region.

Emission cut details needed

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha made a huge commitment last week at the 21st Conference on Climate Change in Paris. He said he would put Thailand on the path to making massive cuts in greenhouse gas emissions between now and 2030. But before he did that, Gen Prayut also signed a plan to boost electricity output over the next 20 years, partly by the construction of coal-fired power plants. He needs to tell the country how he intends to meet both goals.

Army can't probe its own

» Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has ordered a second look at the Rajabhakti Park controversy. This decision is both good and bad news. The good news is that Gen Prawit, who is also defence minister, recognises the first, shallow probe of the park's construction satisfied no one. But there is an attitude of here-we-go-again to the second inquiry.
