» When Game Of Thrones ended, it left a bad taste in almost everyone's mouth but more importantly, it left a gory and busty fantasy medieval void in the world. Once a Netflix adaptation of The Witcher, a popular franchise consisting of novels and video games, was announced, everyone speculated that it would fill that void. While there are similarities, the Netflix show starring Henry Cavill quickly carved out a place and built a fanbase of its own. Guru speaks to showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich about season two, which was released last week, and the difference between what the Geralt audiences saw in the past to the one they'll see now.

» A pandemic puts the world at a standstill and turns the lives of everyone upside down. No, we're not talking about Covid. Station Eleven is a novel written by Emily St. John Mandel in 2014. Even then, it seemed to predict somewhat eerily and accurately just what the world was going to go through in the past two years. Now, HBO has brought the novel to life in a new miniseries. Despite the apocalyptic storyline, the show is unlike the drab and dark shows we've come to expect from an end-of-the-world TV series, but showcases humanity moving on from what they went through. Guru speaks with two stars of the series, Mackenzie Davis and Himesh Patel, about similarities with the pandemic and how important art is in keeping us going through difficult times.

» We can all agree on one thing: this whole pandemic is a crapfest. The time when Thailand was lauded for successfully handling the first wave has long gone and we are in the throes of the third wave with daily cases almost hitting 10,000 (at least in the time of going to print), hospitals running out of beds for patients and vaccinations going at a snail's pace. » A blogger a number of years ago cited an alleged Unesco statistic stating that Thais only read eight lines per year compared to the five books a year Singaporeans and Vietnamese read. I couldn't find the statistic anywhere but a former editor for Guru also wrote in one of her past editor's note that the National Statistic Office reported in 2005 that Thais read an average of just seven lines a year. However, the Unesco site which you can check out has traced that illiteracy has begun declining in 2015 so perhaps the seven-lines-per-year has improved. But why in the world am I talking about Thailand's literacy rates when we usually talk about food or Uncle Tu's latest blunders in this magazine? Well, today is actually World Book Day, and we're listing out a few things you can do to celebrate the occasion -- and perhaps also keep that upward trajectory on the Unesco stat going. It's affected everyone's life whether it's their jobs, their mental health or their relationships. There's no question that these are trying times for everyone, and while we spend the majority of the time at Guru being all snarky and sarcastic, the stories of kindness and love during the pandemic is enough to warm our cold, scornful hearts. Quarantine 2.0

» Let's be honest and admit that it was bound to happen. The second we got wind of a domestic case in Samut Sakhon, it was only a question of when things would be ordered to close. Granted, it may not be a hard lockdown like the first time around. However, as of the writing of this article, we're upwards of 10,000 cases now compared to the now-measly 1,000 or so we had the first time around so it's safe to say that things are a little worse than before. However, vaccines are set to arrive next month so there's a glimmer of hope. All we have to do is once again limit ourselves from going out in public unless absolutely necessary. I know the thought of having to once again lock ourselves at home is a drag, and that's why we've got this handy list for you. » The name Sherlock Holmes is synonymous to being eccentric, weird and a genius that no one can match. Aside from the original novels, there have been many versions of the famous detective. However, in Enola Holmes, he plays a supporting character and tries to help his sister, Enola, make her way in a world that's trying to dictate who she wants to be. And who better to fill the shoes of the detective this time around than the dashing Henry Cavill? Guru spoke to Cavill about his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and working with Millie Bobby Brown.
