» It comes as no surprise that Thailand is among five Asian countries -- together with China, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines -- that are responsible for more than half of the 8 million tonnes of plastic waste dumped into the world's oceans every year, according to a 2015 Ocean Conservancy Report. The people of Thailand use over 70 billion plastic bags a year.

A silent killer

» A lot of Thais, especially those in journalism, are mourning the death of Poochanok Rakthai, the TNN24 news reporter who died of liver cancer last week. At only 30 years of age, Poochanok was diagnosed in December last year with a 13cm tumour in his liver. The malignancy was found to have been caused by the hepatitis B virus.

» Sleep disorders are a universal problem. In Thailand, up to 40% of the population are reported to have suffered insomnia at some point, according to the Department of Mental Health. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers insufficient sleep a public epidemic with an estimate of 50-70 million American adults falling victim to sleep, or wakefulness, disorder.
