    Monstrously uninspiring

» Watching The Mummy -- the latest reboot of the classic Hollywood monster -- I couldn't help but recall a re-imagining of a similar classic Hollywood monster, 2014's Dracula Untold. Bashed by critics as a poor attempt at "superhero-izing" Dracula, it was largely recognised as a bad film, one that would most likely be better off with a stake in its metaphorical heart.

    Neon-splashed altered reality

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 09/02/2018

» Part Blade Runner, part samurai Western, Netflix's Altered Carbon is one of its most interesting originals yet. With its 10-episode season released last Friday, the series is set in a futuristic, neon-splashed world, where death has been conquered thanks to a mysterious alien technology that allows people to digitally store their consciousness and personalities before downloading them into new bodies.

    Life, death and rebirth

» As any honest Thai person can tell you, Bangkok is a city of dualities. Walk down one street and you'll find the most serene parks, bombastic high-rises and venerable temples. Turn down the wrong soi, however, and you're suddenly in a seedy alleyway filled with drugs, alcohol and questionable "massage parlours".

    A cinematic wonder

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 02/06/2017

» After the crushing disappointments that were Man Of Steel (2013), Batman V Superman (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016), it'd be completely fair to assume that Wonder Woman -- the latest superhero film to join DC's ailing cinematic universe -- would likewise be an easy pass. You'd be mistaken.

    A fortunate series

» Based closely on the children's novels of the same name, Netflix's A Series Of Unfortunate Events -- the online streaming service's latest high-profile original feature -- isn't a pleasant tale.

    The Force has indeed awoken

» I regretted attending the press screening of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens the moment the iconic Star Wars logo burst onto the screen. Not because I have anything against Star Wars, or that I didn't think the movie was going to be awesome. Quite the contrary, in fact. My regret lies in the fact that I'm not watching this movie at home, alone, where my inner geek can scream and cheer at the triumphant return of what is perhaps one of the most important cinematic universes in pop-culture history.

    Seeking status

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 18/04/2017

» Thailand has long seen a great influx of foreign migrants and workers from its surrounding neighbours, such as Myanmar or Laos. It is also home to many smaller ethnic minority groups such as the Karen, Hmong or Lahu. However, Thailand has never had the best track record when it comes to dealing with these foreign or ethnic minorities, especially when it comes to documentation. This poses a problem to these minorities, many of whom have lived in Thailand for decades, as they don't have the legal documents and identification often required in various situations, from medical or school applications to basic protection of law.

    The marvel of Logan

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 03/03/2017

» It's a boundless shame, to say the least, that both Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart will both be making their departures from their respective roles as Wolverine and Professor X after Logan, the 10th entry to their long-running X-Men franchise. Doubly so, since both actors have never been as riveting as they are in Logan, one of the best superhero films ever made, telling a very grounded, personal story about a broken man, not a superhero or larger-than-life symbol. In this regard, Logan elevates itself from a superb superhero film to a superb film, period, one that all superhero films to come should strive to emulate.
