    Soi Sesame

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 05/10/2017

» Ryan Dillon knows tables around the world intimately. "There's usually a lot of gum," he says from under a table at the Siam Kempinski's business centre. The American muppeteer was sitting on the floor under the table with his arms raised -- a position where he spends most of his time as the performer of Sesame Street's red furball Elmo. Recently in town last month, Dillon and Elmo were out and about in Bangkok to promote the new season of Sesame Street, which airs on MCOT Kids every weekend on 8am.

» With his square-rimmed black glasses, perfectly-gelled hair and tall, lanky build, Isaac Hempstead Wright looks like the geeky but cute wallflower BFF that's just dropped out of a Hollywood teen flick. Of course, it was actually dropping out of a tower -- after witnessing Operation Incest -- that he is known for, in his role as Bran Stark from the wildly-popular series Game Of Thrones.

Claire Keefe-Fox on the historical fiction she reads when she's not writing it

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 14/03/2016

» French-American author Claire Keefe-Fox was recently in town to lead a historical-fiction writing workshop at Bangkok Edge and to launch her latest and first English-language novel, Siamese Tears (published in Thai last October). Having garnered popularity for her books about a Greek adventurer turned prime counsellor to King Narai -- Constantine Phaulkon -- her latest historical outing puts readers in the shoes of a young Brit-French belle who witnesses the intriguing games of colonial powerplay between the French and British in Siam in the late 1800s. Revolving around events that led to the Paknam Incident during the Franco-Siamese War, this book is a blend of fact and fiction that comes to life thanks to the author's scrupulous research in academic books, biographies and French diplomatic archives.

    Sail away with the family

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 12/06/2015

» Even if awkward silences, nosey aunties and shameless pretentiousness is part of the package, it's still hard to not accept an invitation to an all-paid-for 10-day cruise to Greece. If anything, it's the much-awaited all-star cast of Dil Dhadakne Do (Let The Heart Beat) that makes you want to tag along, even if you want no part in their drama. Using an upper crust 30th wedding anniversary as the backdrop, director Zoya Akhtar serves up a condensed trip through every type of familial problem Indian families face in just under three hours.

    Tied to a Sino past

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 04/05/2015

» The unavoidable and never-failing icebreaker -- do you have any Chinese blood? -- will always have its place in Thai society. Yet it's also something of an empty question, believes Singaporean author Jeffery Sng: "By the time Phibunsongkhram changed the country's name to Thailand, the Thais were already so mixed that it was hard to find anyone 100% Thai."

    What's new, pussycat?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/01/2013

» If you haven't been living under a rock for the past two months, we're pretty sure you must have come across, or heard about the newest cat cafe in town: Purr Cat Cafe Club. We're sure this concept cafe is nothing obscure to ailurophiles, but for those who exhibit indifference to these curious creatures, a cat cafe is one where the shop's kitties are free to walk wherever they want.
