Following that he visited the eight children who had been extracted and taken to Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital.

» At the very moment Thailand has begun to worry about massive imports of mostly dangerous foreign waste, the most dramatic proof possible exposes one of the country's most dangerous exports. Marine biologists on the weekend released details and highly disturbing photographs of the death last week of a pilot whale in the Gulf off Songkhla province. An autopsy by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) after the animal drifted ashore and died on the beach showed the cause of death. It either starved or strangled on more than 80 large plastic bags.

Still, the grieving will not end. No person will forget the uncountable accomplishments of the greatest Thai of our times. The expiration of the mourning period returns the country to a semblance of normality but things will never be quite the same.

» The Criminal Court's ruling on the death of a former land official while in Department of Special Investigation (DSI) custody is a twist in the high-profile case that got the institute in hot water. Thawatchai Anukul, a 66-year-old former land official, was found dead at a detention facility on the sixth floor of the DSI headquarters on Aug 29 last year. He was in the process of being probed in connection with accusations of land document fraud involving the unlawful issuance of land title deeds for more than a thousand plots in national parks across Phuket and Phangnga.

Jatupat bail veto a puzzle

» Last Sunday, student activist Jatupat "Pai Dao Din" Boonpattararaksa had another bail request denied. Among more than 2,000 social media posters of a BBC Thai article on the monarchy, Mr Jatupat is the only person who was charged with lese majeste and computer crime. First, he got bail. Then, his bail was revoked and his subsequent bail requests denied -- on the grounds that he posted a new brief Facebook message seen as "ridiculing state power without fear of the law" and that he failed to delete the shared BBC story from his wall. He has been locked up since Dec 22.
