LIFE

On a liquid diet

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/03/2020

» Unless you're really health-conscious, on a cleanse or you're watching your weight, vegetable juices probably aren't your drink of choice. After all, they're not necessarily appetising. The taste of most vegetable juices take getting used to and after making numerous faces because of the odd tastes, you may start enjoying them. However, that's not the case for Paak. In fact, they may be the reason you start drinking vegetable beverages on a regular basis.

Summer treats

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/05/2019

» If you're like me, you've probably been asking the same thing for the past month or so now: when is this heat going to end? I know I'm supposed to be used to it living in Bangkok but I think we can all agree that the heat is terrible and that our weather apps are lying when they say it only 35°C outside. However, we do have a decision to make, either we let the heat get to us (which it already has, kind of) or we can enjoy what the summer has to offer: a number of seasonal summer treats. Yes, this heat has made it ripe for a number of treats to come out of the woodwork, enticing us to enjoy them. And so, because we truly do love you, dear readers, we've done the heavy lifting and tried some of these treats for you. Which ones should you try and which ones should you stay away from?

Artisanal eats

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/05/2018

» Technology is a blessing and a curse. It makes life easier and in turn makes us lazy and have short attention spans. We want things done quick and we want things now, and we've lost the appreciation for the art and process of handmade products and the skill it requires because hey, if robots can do it, why can't people? That makes things made by hand more special despite the fact that that's the way things have been done for years. Handmade means nothing, however, if it also isn't high quality. Luckily, the Big Mango is home to a number of stores that produce top-tier artisanal products -- more specifically, artisanal food, which we think makes it more special because nothing is more special than food, right? You may not be aware of some of these stores (we admit we ourselves weren't aware some of them existed) but hey, that's why we're here -- to tell you about them so all you have to do is feast and enjoy. Here are five artisanal eats in Bangkok that you should try.

» LETAR Coffee Bar is sandwiched between Thong Lor and Phrom Phong (though Phrom Phong Sukhumvit 39 is the fastest route to the shop) and is hidden in Building 3 of the Racquet Club on the 5th floor. Sounds like it's a little out of the way? It is, but despite this and having been opened for a mere three months, LETAR Coffee Bar has regular customers and has been doing very well, according to its founders. Surprising? Yes, considering its location and small space, as well as the fact that the menu isn't that extensive. Anyways, come September, they'll be moving permanently to Central Embassy. But what makes people come back for more?

It's Jamba time

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» There's a fear that's associated with embarking on the journey of trying to eat healthy. People usually think that means giving up a lot of things they like and replacing it with things that aren't so tasty and perhaps even downright awful. While the former may be true, the latter definitely isn't and we can say that with absolute certainty after having tried Jamba Juice.
