    A stroll back in time

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 02/07/2020

» A refreshing breeze blew from the other side of the river, greeted by cheerfully rustling leaves of land and aquatic plants along its expansive path. Different kinds of egrets, thanks to their sizes and bright white plumage, could easily be spotted foraging near the waterside, but faint chirps in the air also revealed the presence of numerous other birds hiding among the foliage. In the river, a monitor lizard emerged from the dense floating patches of water hyacinth and swam leisurely in the open to the far bank. Meanwhile, along the lively yet tranquil waterway line traditional-style wooden houses built on tall stilts, some with boats moored at the water's edge.

    Thailand's abundance

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 09/04/2020

» April is usually the height of the hot season. The sea, both in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman, is at its best. The forest, meanwhile, may seem lifeless, yet actually there are a lot of interesting things going on in the ecosystem. Most waterfalls, for example, may not be boasting powerful cascades, but the calm, clear water reveals a fascinating array of fish and other aquatic lifeforms that thrive. And guess what: even during this dry period of the year, there are falls in some protected forests where the water continues to flow down rigorously, regardless of what month is shown on the calendar. Too bad I don't have their photographs in digital form and no time to dig through the piles of slides.

    Undisturbed by time

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 20/06/2019

» I had been to Kyoto a couple of times before. However, I had always thought of it as a city, as the former imperial capital of Japan. I didn't realise that Kyoto as a prefecture has much more to offer than the famous bamboo grove and those popular shrines and temples. Along the northern coast of the prefecture, referred to by some as "Kyoto By The Sea" nestled interesting places not much known among non-Japanese travellers. The fishing village of Ine, with its unique and well-preserved architecture, interested me most. It was the major purpose of my latest visit to the Land of the Rising Sun.

    Bright yellow bike parade

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 17/12/2015

» Nice scenery and a network of well-paved roads with little traffic make Chiang Rai a great destination for cyclists. Recently, I got to revisit this northernmost province bordering two neighbouring countries with the biking team of Nok Air, one of the airlines that offer regular services between Chiang Rai and Bangkok.

Take a stand on taxis, general

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 22/01/2015

» The bitter account of a Japanese educational volunteer's latest experience at Suvarnabhumi airport, which he referred to as "a disgrace to Thailand", has been all over the internet in the past few days. Originating on Facebook, where it since has been shared more than 1,600 times, Koki Aki — known as Kamen Rider among some of Bangkok's underprivileged children after visiting them dressed as the motorcycle-driving Japanese superhero — complained about poor service at the airport, especially in regards to taxis.

Onwards and upwards, in an orderly line

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 11/12/2014

» During rush hour the other day, I exited Sukhumvit MRT station and was struck by an awesome sight that filled my heart with joy and my eyes with tears. There, on the escalators leading up to the adjacent Asok BTS station, people were standing in single file to the right of the moving stairs, leaving the left side open from the bottom all the way to the very top.

Sasebo: A place to make your heart sing

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 08/01/2015

» Sasebo. Sasebo. Sasebo. I don't remember exactly how many times I read this name out loud the first time I saw it on the map. To me, it's both beautiful and funny. Try pronouncing the word in front of the mirror and notice the changing shape of your lips as you say it, especially the last syllable. Repeat just a few times, and I guarantee you'll see yourself smiling.

    A Skytrain named Desire

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 06/11/2014

» Smoking, eating and drinking on the BTS Skytrain are strictly prohibited. But there is no express forbidding of farting, spitting, peeing, cooking or lovemaking. That's understandable — such acts and several others are known to be no-nos in public areas.
