    Gonna make ya sweat

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 14/11/2014

» As Thais, we love to dance. Within a space of just one month starting on Nov 22, there will be four full-scale dance music festivals that, although similar in terms of musical genres and DJ line-ups, will be produced, presented and themed in a variety of different styles.

    Mariah who-cares-y?

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 04/11/2014

» As one of the most memorable and praised pop vocalists of her time, there's no denying that Mariah Carey's vocal prowess is second to none, with her ability to go beyond the seventh octave and her signature whistle register. When at the top of her game, Carey's sense of pitch and acrobatic whispery vocals are revered, and have given pop music a new sense of entitlement.

    Creative calendar clash

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 06/11/2014

» Last weekend saw two equally great events go head-to-head. It was unfortunate, however, that "Sala Inspiring Space" and "Cat Expo" happened on the same weekend as Thailand could definitely use more of these types of creative gatherings rather than the numbing so-called "festivals".

Ain’t no such thing as a free lunch

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 11/11/2014

» I may not be Bodyslam’s biggest fan, but I have a lot of respect for Thailand’s biggest rock band — its unflinching dedication to its art and musical advancement doesn’t seem rest on its laurels or established fame. I understand why the band is where it is today, and I’m convinced it deserves its place in Thai music history.

    Clued in and caustic

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 18/07/2014

» Showtika Somjid’s pseudonym was suggested by the names of a mentally disturbed couple, Nola and Nolee, who lived rough in her neighbourhood; they were familiar faces, often seen roaming the streets, but they never caused any harm to anybody. Showtika said she never meant to spark off speculation that there might be deep, philosophical reasons for her adoption of “Nolanolee”, the moniker she uses to sign the art she creates. She just thought it sounded like a “cute and friendly” tag and said she sometimes wonders what combination of events brought that pair of homeless people to that juncture in their lives.

    Inching towards stage success

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 06/06/2014

» As one of the most iconic rock musicals of all time, staging Hedwig And The Angry Inch is by no means an easy task to tackle. Written by John Cameron Mitchell and composed by Stephen Trask, the play requires in-depth character studies, a wry sense of humour, outrageous talents and an informed understanding of music and literature.

    Ice, ice Mickey

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 08/04/2014

» All things Disney have dominated the psyche of children around the world ever since Mickey Mouse popped up in black and white. Little girls, especially, still dream of becoming Disney princesses despite finger-waving warnings and criticisms of gender stereotyping and not-so-subtly hidden chauvinistic values. As much as you try to shun your young ones from forming unrealistic ideas of relationships through these old-time cartoons and steer them, if they insist, toward newer Disney works like Toy Story or Frozen, the unexplainable need for fluffy romance seems to persist, even in grown women.

    Back to her roots

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 20/05/2014

» National Artist Kwanjit Sriprajan is an enigma onstage and off. At 66, she quick-fires volleys of sharp wit during performances, but as she applies her make-up while giving a short interview, she very much looks and sounds like a kind grandma, with a sweet, slow cadence to her voice.

    Model behaviour

Muse, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 15/02/2014

» Adhering to the stereotype, we sometimes scoff at the idea of having an intellectual conversation with models. But none of the enveloping, mean-spirited adjectives often associated with the high-flying career — shallow, materialistic — can be applied to Cheera Choo, a New York-based Thai model. With sharp cheekbones that could cut through glass and hearts, her exotic beauty definitely makes her a model in every physical sense — she is lanky, poised, with delicate limbs and sculpted, carefully made-up features. But she is also a great conversationalist who is engaging, bright, funny and straightforward. Cheera is reminiscent of every girl’s high school best friend.

    Interesting times ahead

Life, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, Published on 14/11/2013

» The last quarter of the year is always a time for celebrations around the world. Here, during the final two months in particular, there's usually a host of parties and other organised events, even if the holiday spirit has been dampened somewhat over the past few weeks by the tense political atmosphere in our capital.
