Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 12/08/2013

» It's an equally difficult task listing what Porachon Sathanon has done professionally for the past 15 years as it is predicting where his passion will lead him in the future.

A new song is being written for Suthep

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 31/01/2014

» A few days of cool breezesare usually welcomed by residents of this perennially sultry city of ours, but it's a bit much that the cold spell has dragged on for so many weeks. Flicking on the air-con makes the house too cold and leaving the windows open is a sure recipe for freezing to death under your own roof. And while taking a shower in the mornings is torture, things get tougher if the air-con at your office blasts out air at a temperature even lower than that outside on the street.

    Novel ideas

» Nigeria’s Port Harcourt has now taken the Unesco-bestowed title of World Book Capital after Bangkok completed its term last month. It had been a year that books and reading culture were supposed to receive a big boost. The campaign, however, has been met with criticism as it seemed to focus more on the surface topics rather than something more fundamental, like promoting a love of reading among Thais.

    Tongue-tied about Thai politics

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 21/05/2014

» Now is definitely not the best time for us Thais to be travelling abroad, especially if we have to engage in conversations with foreigners about the political situation here. Last weekend, I was on a media trip with a group of reporters from Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines and we had to meet up with quite a few people from Europe.

A monthly column rounding up the best of the capital's art scene

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 22/10/2014

» The opening of WTF Gallery's current exhibition "Monday 2 Monday" earlier this month might have been missed by a few. That could partly be explained by the exhibition's title and the fact that the opening was actually on a Friday. In addition, the gallery is closed on Mondays. But this is all beside the point.

A monthly column rounding up the best of the capital’s art scene

» At Yet-Space, there was fried chicken which looked like KFC but tasted worse. At Speedy Grandma, the hipsters, as usual, seemed perfectly fine with Asahi draught as their sole sustenance. At Bangkok University Gallery there was food but I wasn't there in time to see what it was. In this month's column, which rounds up the best food served in the capital's art scene, The Jam Factory Gallery was a sure winner.

    Facades of normality

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 25/02/2015

» Try clicking "join" to just a few exhibition opening events on Facebook and you will realise how overwhelming the Bangkok art scene can actually be. There are notifications of pre-opening private views, pre-opening talks, opening parties, special performances, and, of course, an exhibition closing party again. These plethora of events are totally understandable, however, because art spaces in Bangkok are becoming more about being a fun place to hang out, and, it has to be said, art does get better after a few beers.

    The voice of the northeast

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 17/03/2015

» By the haystack next to a rice field, Yothin Kijbai sung out in high-pitched, rhyming Isan verses that he apparently knew by heart. Dressed in a light blue costume adorned with glittering sequins, the 68-old-year is not a madman but a well-known "comedy molam".

    Art for our sake

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 27/03/2015

» The thing that has been bugging me for the past few months is that every time I write about art, I just can't seem to escape Speedy Grandma, a small gallery in Charoen Krung.
