It could all be pretty amazing again

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/01/2012

» I trust everyone is holding up well at the height of the funny hats and hangovers season. In a few days it will be back to grim reality _ hangovers without the hats. And I won't complain if I don't hear that ''happy new mia'' Thai joke for a while.

A new year and a new experience

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/01/2012

» At my age, any new sensation tends to be an ache or a pain, but this year on New Year's Day, I was up and about at six in the morning, which was definitely a new experience. I hasten to add this wasn't because I hadn't made it to bed after a night's revelry. Admittedly in the past there have been occasions when I've seen dawn rise on Jan 1 before hitting the sack. But this was a genuine early rise and shine occasion. Some explanation is needed for this unnatural behaviour.

    A fair (traffic) cop

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/02/2012

» One of the more encouraging news items of the week was the report that policewomen are now back on the streets of the Big Mango with the unenviable task of handling traffic duty. Eighteen ladies who used to provide security for VIPs and were known as the Sweet Troop will be taking their saccharine charms to the streets.

With Dickens, it was the best of times

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 12/02/2012

» As a nipper in England, I often went for walks with my father. If rain was threatening he would say: ''We'd better take a 'gamp', and would pick up an umbrella in the doorway.''

    Keep on smiling

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/02/2012

» There was a news report recently that Thai people are not as happy as they once were, and the Land of Smiles is becoming a Land of Frowns. From my observations, they certainly might not be as happy, but have not quite reached the stage of Les Miserables. There are still plenty of smiles to savour.

Full steam ahead for the Isan choo-choo

» Earlier this week the cabinet agreed ''in principle'' to a 145 billion baht ''high-speed'' rail project between Bangkok and Nong Khai and another link in the Northeast from Khon Kaen to Nakhon Phanom via Roi Et.

Things could possibly get a bit silly today

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/04/2012

» If you think you have read or heard a few strange stories today, it might be an idea to look at the date and remind yourself it is that special day which thrives on the silly side of life.

The festival that never seems to end

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 15/04/2012

» Songkran appears to have been going on for even longer than usual this year. There's an awful lot of city folks who disappeared a week ago for a ''long weekend'' and haven't been seen since. They probably won't be spotted again until the end of the week, which no doubt will be just in time for another long weekend.

    Writing on the wall

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 29/04/2012

» Not far from my house in Bangkok is a large telephone junction box on which someone has recently sprayed in large black letters "Jon Smith Was Here!". Not the most original form of graffiti , but at least it was spelt correctly. It would have perhaps been more intriguing if it said "Lady Gaga Was Here" or maybe had a bit of local colour like "Thaksin Was Here".

Timing was off, but the thought was there

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 13/05/2012

» With an uncanny sense of bad timing, last week's ''PostScript'' about the excessive heat in Bangkok coincided with the weather making a sudden about turn as the thunderstorms rolled in and it piddled down, cooling things down considerably. Although I welcomed the less sultry weather, it wasn't exactly auspicious for the column. Still, at least it didn't start snowing.
