    » In July 1973, songwriter and DJ Surin Paksiri organised a pleng luk thung concert at the Ratchadamnoen Boxing Stadium in Bangkok. He wanted to hold the event in a park or at a big cinema, but both of those options were too expensive. He settled on the boxing stadium, and he called the concert "Luk Thung Isan vs. Luk Thung Pak Klang" (Isan Country Music vs. Central Country Music).

West African and music from the horn of Africa have taken most of the African rankings, while Spain and “middle” Europe fill up most of the rest of the charts. Unfortunately, no bands or compilations from this region made it onto the charts but with the official release of Sound Of Siam 2 on the Soundway last week in London, next month’s chart will, I predict, have at least one album featuring music from Southeast Asia.

After gaining recognition from their performances at the Festival of the Desert in 2001 in Mali, the band started to perform in Europe and North Africa to great acclaim. After a stunning recording debut with The Radio Tisdas Sessions, the band has gone on to release a further four popular albums, the latest of which, Tassili (Anti, 2011), won a Grammy award for Best World Music Album last year, and reached the World Beat desk this week.
