Art and iPhone photographs: Prisma and other available apps

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 06/07/2016

» Early on Friday morning, there was some excitement in the overnight news about an app developed in Russia that applied artistic effects to photographs. This is not a new idea and I have had some apps that do similar tasks, going back to when I had the iPhone 3G.

A busy week for Apple and me

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/04/2017

» On March 28, there were updates for iOS (10.3) that introduced AFPS: the new Apple File System, which is expected eventually to expand to macOS. There may be some gains in space and speed but these are expected to be small. Also updated were macOS (10.12.4), WatchOS and tvOS.

    AppleTV, Movies and Recent News

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 20/07/2016

» Saturday was livened up by an attempted coup in Turkey. While there are restrictions in place for social media use there, President Erdogan was still able to show viewers he was alive by calling in to a TV station using FaceTime on an iPhone. I am not sure quite what to think of that.

    Apple Awards, updates and releases

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 16/12/2015

» Apple announced its 2015 App Awards last week, and Periscope is the top iPhone app. There was also a local list and the top local iPhone app was Enlight. Simple Machines was the top app for the iPad. I have both and am not surprised they were award winners.

    Apple Music and updated iPods

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 19/08/2015

» I have been using Apple Music a fair amount, although last week spent time catching up with podcasts I had missed while friends were here. During the week, a number of local users who connect to the internet at home via True were complaining that Apple Music was connecting badly. I had a look in iTunes on the Mac and found that "For You" -- perhaps the most significant part of the service -- would connect, but no music was being played. I also tried the Radio stations. While Beats 1 connected, the Classical and Alternative music stations connected but would play no sound (like "For You").

Drive speed and connections with iDevices

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 25/03/2015

» I have been quite happy with the 13-inch MacBook Pro I bought about 18 months ago. With its i5 processor, I had expected lower performance compared to my 15-inch MacBook Pro that had the i7 processor, but the 16GB RAM and Solid State Drive (SSD) made up for that — it was faster in use.

iPhone video — slowing things down, speeding things up

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 18/06/2014

» The last time I watched a football match was the World Cup final in 1966. I far prefer motor racing — four wheels and two. My satellite TV link usually has two channels that show MotoGP, but one has a poor picture and on the other they have not yet learned how to balance ambient noise with commentary.

If you need to get iLife, don't do it by mail

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 10/11/2010

» I thought I had been smart by ordering iLife online as there were no copies in the shops, but I watched the online tracking as it remained at the airport for several days: Clearance delay. I checked with DHL on Thursday and was told that this was due to Customs. I think she meant with a large "C". I made a final check on Friday evening. I look forward to Apple's online software facility and downloading directly: no disks; no frustrating waits.

Unleash your creative capabilities with iLife

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 24/11/2010

» This is my third look at iLife '11, which includes GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb. Although iTunes is a part of iLife and it integrates with the other parts, it is installed and updated separately, because of its functions as a conduit for online services and synchronising of iOS devices, like the iPhone.

    Using iPhoto in iLife 11

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/11/2010

» As soon as I had installed iLife '11, I downloaded the 9.0.1 update and ran that before opening iPhoto. During the week, another update to iPhoto was released, bringing it to version 9.1 and returning Calendars to the "Create" selections. No-one is saying why this was missing in the initial release of iLife. I am writing this based on the latest update (9.1) (www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto).
