News, Published on 13/01/2012
» Poverty is not only about not having enough money. It is also about exploitation and oppression, and about armed conflicts and wars that make it impossible to run a business, visit the doctor, or send children to school. In short, poverty is about politics _ and the need to devise political solutions to its underlying causes. And this involves more than providing money.

Laundry list to catch up with
News, Published on 21/02/2012
» The "name and shame" tactic of the international Financial Action Task Force (FATF) certainly worked as intended against Thailand. The Paris-based inter-governmental group placed Thailand on a shortlist of countries generally identified as havens for money laundering. The FATF listed Thailand along with the likes of Nigeria, Myanmar and Bolivia as a friendly, welcoming nation for drug traffickers, white-collar criminals, terrorists and other outlaws. Few people would recognise Thailand as such a country _ because there is much less to this disturbing report than meets the eye.

But even with this positive step, huge gaps remain in national security.

Time to do the laundry
News, Published on 11/06/2012
» Over the past several years and governments, Thailand has fallen behind the rest of the world when it comes to tackling money laundering. The "world", in this case the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), is on the verge of putting the country on a "dark-grey list" _ not quite a blacklist, but close enough. The FATF warned the government and the financial community in February that it should pass and start enforcing three laws which deal mostly with keeping terrorists away from international markets.
