Audience of one is better than none

    Roger Crutchley, Published on 13/08/2023

» There was a story from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last week concerning English actress Georgie Grier whose one-woman show Sunsets attracted a grand audience of one. A tweet with pictures of a tearful Grier after the show prompted considerable sympathy and the following night she found herself performing to a near full-house which she joked felt the equivalent of "Wembley".

There's nothing wrong in shedding a tear

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/09/2022

» I admit to spending the best part of Monday afternoon stoically trying to fight off the teardrops -- and almost managing it. I was watching the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on TV and for an ancient Brit like me it was emotionally exhausting. Please excuse me for the sentimentality.

Time is on your side … if the watch is fast

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/01/2018

» Recent debate about fancy timepieces had me thinking about my first ever watch, which my dad bought when I was a kid. He was a stickler for punctuality and hated being late for anything. When he gave me the watch it came with sage-like advice. He told me to always set it a few minutes fast so I wouldn't be late, and to this day it has proved wise counsel. Of course it didn't stop me being late, but at least I was two or three minutes earlier in my lateness than I would otherwise have been, if that makes sense.

Maybe smartphones are only for the smart

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 29/03/2015

» I had to sort out a mobile phone bill the other day and went with the wife to a shop to pay it. The young lady behind the counter asked to see my phone and almost choked when I handed it over.

Off to the movies … and a bit of tweeting

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/12/2014

» There has been considerable debate in the Bangkok social media concerning the merits of tweeting on the phone while sitting in a cinema. While this hardly ranks as the most important issue facing the kingdom in these demanding times, it does raise the sensitive problem of cinema etiquette.

Pickpockets, loose women, boasters and bluffers

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/05/2013

» One memorable scene from the 1968 hit musical Oliver! featured Fagin teaching urchins the art of pickpocketing to the tune of You've Got To Pick A Pocket or Two. Fagin's message seems to have been adopted worldwide, as there is hardly a country that doesn't have a pickpocket problem, although one suspects there aren't too many in North Korea. According to the Daily Mail, in Britain alone last year there were an estimated 1,700 cases a day.

The 'bear of very little brain' and wobbly spelling

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 13/01/2013

» Many will say that it is impossible to have a quiet New Year in Isan, but my wife and I somehow managed it, a reflection of getting wrinkly one fears. But to look on the positive side, I am now the proud possessor of a yellow Winnie-the-Pooh mug, courtesy of a couple of farmers' kids who live next door to us in deepest Chaiyaphum.

Exams a necessary evil, or pure humbug?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/06/2012

» Most people would probably agree that taking exams is an unpleasant experience. There can be few things worse than that horrible sinking feeling when you look at the question paper and your mind goes totally blank. You know you are doomed.

Police help crooks - to jail

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/06/2012

» One of the more intriguing stories of the week makes you wonder about the thought processes of certain criminals. Two motorcyclists were cruising around Chon Buri when their bikes ran out of fuel on a fairly deserted road. For two hours they tried to flag down passing vehicles, to no avail. I mean, would you stop for two motorcyclists on a remote road?

Welcome to the land of queues, please stand by

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/03/2012

» One thing the current immigration woes at Suvarnabhumi have highlighted is that no one likes to stand in queues, be it at airports, banks, buffets or bathrooms.
