    Lighting up Lampang

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/05/2018

» Chae Son National Park in Lampang province is famous for its hot springs. However, not many people know that every April the park's geothermal area becomes the venue for nightly mass gatherings of cicadas. Perhaps even fewer people are aware that hidden in the back of the park headquarters, there's a road that goes across the forested mountain all the way to the popular Chiang Mai village of Mae Kam Pong.

» Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's major islands, makes up one-fifth of the country's land mass. Yes, it's not small. And definitely, it has much more to offer visitors than the already popular destinations like Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Niseko or Hakodate in the central and southern areas of this large island.

    Exploring Bangkok's old town

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 04/01/2018

» With exceptionally light traffic and lovely weather, Bangkok was wonderful for biking during the recent long holiday weekend. Instead of joining the mass in the exodus out of the capital, on New Year's Eve my friends and I opted to hang around and explore the city on two wheels.

» For most of us, competing in the Tour de France, the world's most esteemed cycling race, is simply an impossible dream. Even riding alongside a champ of the grand tour also seems like pure fantasy. But not anymore -- it's a dream that could actually come true.

    Braving the bull run

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 02/06/2016

» Rural Highway 3052 runs along much of the northern edge of Khao Yai National Park serving as a shortcut between Thanarat (3077) Road to the west and Highway 304 in Wang Nam Khieo to the east. Over the past few years, this area has become a popular holiday destination, especially among well-to-do city slickers. However, not many of those tourists are aware that at the back of the many luxury resorts along the south side of the rural highway there's something which separates them from the protected forest that is home to numerous wildlife.

    The German legacy in Qingdao

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 17/03/2016

» The wind was chilly and the mass of fog it brought inland from the adjacent sea obscured the entire sky and anything higher than the treetops. From the lookout point on a small hill where I was standing I could see through the white haze part of a town made up of Western-style buildings that were topped with red-tiled roofs, including one impressive mansion perched on the side of another mound nearby. When the sky is clear, I was told, it would also be possible to see the twin towers of a century-old Catholic church and many other pieces of historical architecture further away.

» Hundreds of thousands of people and their bicycles will be out on the streets throughout Thailand this Sunday as part of the Bike for Mom event. Many of them will be cyclists who ride regularly and know what they are doing. Others will be newbies who may know how to ride but are not aware that this is not enough to survive the long mass ride.

    Roads less travelled

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 09/04/2015

» A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a biking event in Krabi organised by Nok Air. The day following the mass ride through the southern town I joined the airline's cycling team in a trip to Koh Lanta Yai, one of the province's largest islands. The Nok Air riders rode some 32km on the paved roads from Koh Lanta Yai's main pier at Sala Dan to the old town on the other side of the island. But I had another plan.
