    Sweet temptation

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 26/04/2013

» That round mass of butter and eggs they call a mamon looks painfully plain, but a bite into it insists otherwise. A mamon is a sweet, light and fluffy butter cake which stands out for its simplicity: it does not require any frosting or toppings to be enjoyed.

    It's a choux-in

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 06/09/2013

» You can't lie about choux pastries. Their light crispy shell is in itself a dead giveaway to whether it has been kept overnight or not. On Silom Complex's basement floor, it can be tough trying to navigate and break through all that franchise clutter to get a really good bite, but rest assured that some bake-houses do offer quality choux pastries with a zing of their own.

    Bosom buddy

» It sounds a little too good to be true, but our intelligent race has contrived a mechanical device that can enlarge the human breast - in fact, it has been on sale in the United States for a decade. Medically proven and backed by research, it is known as the Brava AFT System.

    Smoke and mirrors

» Magic. In an era of smartphones that can perform once-impossible tasks, the word doesn't quite evoke the same allure and mystique that it once did. But despite its diminishing appeal as a form of mass entertainment, the art of illusion still has a few rabbits left in its hat. In July this year, 13-year-old Thirawat Kongnugul glided past young wizards from all over the world to bag second place in the International Brotherhood of Magic's yearly Stage Contest in Arizona _ proof that Thai magicians still have a few tricks up their collective sleeve (see accompanying story).

    Cool flavours

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 03/01/2014

» The glorious winter breezes in Thailand last a lot shorter than we'd like them to, so if we can't feel the chills on the outside, the least we could do is feel them from the inside. A lot of new eateries have burgeoned on Siam Paragon's ground floor, and one of the coolly intriguing ones worth a visit is Stickhouse. Under their two wide glass panels are rows and rows of creamy-looking gelato pressed into the shape of a popsicle.

    Sweet dreams

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 31/01/2014

» The north side of Siam Paragon's fourth floor used to be a rather dry and vague void, but today it is filled with pastel columns, and a flouncy cloud-like pink net sprawls across the air to create a canopy in an area called Dream Forest. The centre seating area is engulfed in a completely pink, fanciful and jungle-like theme, is enclosed by six different sweet stores on the fourth floor (True Coffee, Fucheer, Royal Sugar, Tart to Tart, Patisserie Masatomi, Cupcake Love) and four more on the fifth (Custard No. 4, Love to Eat, Mister Donut, Chewy Junior). This lovely quiet location exudes a dreamy ambience, away from the bustle of a typical food floor's commotion and frenzy. Browse around to find a menu that rings your bell, pay at their counter and walk back to your seat and wait to be served all this done gloriously service-free. No more days of bickering, because anyone can eat whatever they want from any store. We visit the most attractive setups at this new hive of sweetness.

A survey of Siam: It's shopping as usual

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 03/02/2014

» Our beloved Siam Square goes through torments, both political and non-political, and has survived throughout the years to maintain itself as the hub of teenage trendiness. Siam Square's latest test barely three years after the red-shirts riots is the People's Democratic Reform Committee's "shutdown" operation, with its centre at the Pathumwan intersection.

One of the key players in the industry is Twinings, the British marketer that has been selling tea since 1706. Stephen Twining is from the 10th generation of the famous tea family and is not only a tea master, but also a seasoned spokesperson that can chat about tea all day.

    Robots to taste-test Thai food

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 31/10/2014

» Leave it to the electronic tongue and nose to distinguish how deliriously delicious or insanely crappy a certain tom yum tastes. If Thai food is to have a distinctive uniform recognised by the whole world, well, a standard's got to start somewhere right?
