Creativity and innovation: same-same but different

Business, Detlef Reis, Published on 04/08/2016

» Do creative leaders and innovation managers perform the same innovation role? A few months ago, I had an interesting conversation related to this question with the global head of idea and innovation management of a tech multinational. He revealed to my surprise that he sometimes has to supply ideas to his organisation's idea management system. This is an executive who is supposed to be a strategic, big-picture thinker driving major innovation initiatives. Sweating the small stuff is a waste of his time and talent, if you ask me.

Business, Detlef Reis, Published on 19/03/2015

» 'Business has only two functions — marketing and innovation," American management consultant, educator and author Peter Drucker once said, and he was right, although I would reverse the order, as innovation must create the products to be marketed. But helping marketers with innovation has shown me that marketers think like Drucker, with marketing being primary and innovation secondary.

Business, Detlef Reis, Published on 11/05/2017

» Happy anniversary, Creativity Un-Limited! It's been 10 years since this column first appeared in the Bangkok Post. Over the last decade, I've produced 257 articles on business creativity and innovation, totalling 240,000 words or enough for six books. I already have all the content."

But what if there were a tool to help managers better understand the individual styles of their team members?

Why death is the unlikely ally of creation

Business, Detlef Reis, Published on 10/11/2016

» The email is titled "2017 Creative Mornings Themes" and opens with the question: "Interested in talking about one topic as a keynote speaker?" I go through the list of themes: mystery, moments, taboo, beyond, serendipity, survival, equality, genius, compassion, pioneer, death, and context. Instantly, I am attracted to "genius". After all, reconnecting with our inner genius is what Thinkergy's creative Genius Journey leadership method is all about.

Life is a journey, not a destination

Business, Detlef Reis, Published on 03/03/2016

» 'Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less travelled, And that has made all the difference", are the key lines in Robert Frost's famous poem "The Road Not Taken". Thirteen years ago, I experienced a magical Eureka moment that made me leave the well-trodden path and continue my journey through life and my professional career along the path less travelled -- and that has made all the difference.
