    In the name of love

» Love is indeed a strange and powerful force. It can make us do crazy things like stare at the phone willing our darling to call for the fifth time of the day. It can make us spend a year's salary impressing our khun noo girlfriend with an LV bag despite an unwavering credit card debt. It can drive us to hide in the bushes behind the object of our affection's house, going through their trash in the hope of finding a lock of their hair to use in a love spell.

» Bicycle-friendly Bangkok sounds like an oxymoron given how inhospitable the city's streets are. However, many local groups are initiating a strong movement to promote bicycling in the city as a way to get fit, ease traffic congestion, and save the world. And in case you want to become a part of this healthy cycle of change, here's our round-up of basic aspects of bicycling in the city you need to know.

    What's the big Idea?

» We're increasingly sure that becoming an adult in Thailand doesn't require passing any tests in common sense. The number of grown-ups we've seen come up with a plan to achieve something through flabbergasting means is more flabbergasting itself (doubling the flabbage factor). With all due respect, here are our picks of the most questionable ideas ever cooked up in the Kingdom. (If nothing else, they should make you feel good about your plan to get off work by rubbing your face with a sick kid, or something equally silly).

8 online shows you need to watch

» Have you become tired of the cliches on mainstream Thai TV? We sure have. These days we struggle to get through a single lakorn episode because the main characters unrealistically have perfect make-up and hair while sleeping (or even while in jail). Don't get us started on the oversupply of singing contests (which seems to act like a factory churning out performers). There are also game shows that reward celebrity contestants (who already make way more money than your average Thai). Couldn't we have something more original please, people in TV land?

» Last week Education Minister Chaturon Chaisaeng ordered officials to look into a report prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF) that showed the Thai educational system was potentially left behind at the bottom among eight Asean countries surveyed (to be fair, the WEF surveyed 144 countries around the world and in certain aspects of education we're doing better than others). Our dad, the Bangkok Post, reported later in the week that the minister vowed to embark on efforts to improve the education system and that his ministry will make education reform a national agenda.

» Some ordinary objects that have a straightforward use elsewhere in the world seem to have more application or deeper meaning through Thai eyes. This week we search for ordinary objects with extraordinary uses in Thailand.

    Not the news

» We think we aren’t the only ones who have been glued to our smartphone screens of late, following updates regarding #BangkokShutdown on Twitter and whatnot. Amid the cascade of information and misinformation, one item caught our attention, like a crystal-encrusted golden whistle under the midday light. It was an item about nightlife giant Ku De Ta closing its doors after a series of “bad circumstances” over the past few months that were bad for business with the shutdown being the last straw.
