The light between oceans

» From its origins as the solo project of guitarist Noppanan Panicharoen in 2006, Inspirative has steadily evolved into one of Thailand's most consistent post-rock bands. The line-up now boasts four additional members: bassist Amornthep Masawang, guitarist Pongpat Phaukwattana, drummer Sirichai Chanmanklakul and pianist/vocalist Wuttipong Huangpetch. The quintet established themselves on the Bangkok indie circuit through gigs at legendary indie nights like Dudesweet and Mind The Gap. This, naturally, led to the release of Floating Down Through The Clouds, their debut three-track EP whose title was inspired by the lyrics to Pink Floyd's 1983 prog-rock ballad, The Gunners Dream. This was followed by the equally stellar releases Mysteriously Awake and Memories Come Rushing Up To Meet Me Now.

Stepping Out into the Light

» If there's an adage that could succinctly describe the overall sonic aesthetic of The xx up to this point, it would be "less is more". As trite as that may sound, the trio's 2009 self-titled debut was a prime exercise in restraint and impactful minimalism -- a meek concoction of hypnotic basslines, stark drum machine and laconic, understated vocals that recall a furtive whisper in the dark. It's the kind of music made principally by introverts for introverts, but somehow, along the way, its indie-slash-R&B-slash-soul appeal attracted a far wider audience. The group went on to win the Mercury Prize the following year and suddenly found themselves struggling with a pop star status.

» Behind the moniker MorMor stands a Toronto native named Seth Nyquist. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter only started churning out music last year and his name is already on everyone's lips. This is mostly due to the strength of his debut EP Heaven's Only Wishful, a nifty self-produced collection of five songs boasting the lush bedroom pop DNA and the sultry sophistication of R&B and disco. Clocking in just under half-an-hour, the EP managed to showcase Nyquist's knack for seamlessly blending genres and creating the sound and narratives which are entirely his own.

» For most people, the name Jim James has always been associated with American southern rock outfit My Morning Jacket, the band he's been fronting over the last two decades with seven albums worth of discography. But those who follow the band more closely will know that James always had a solo career brewing inside of him as evidenced by his 2009 Tribute To EP, a six-track collection of George Harrison covers released under Yim Yames. The said EP was a precursor to his full-length solo debut, 2013's Regions of Light and Sound of God, and its follow-up, Eternally Even.

» In March 1947, pianist and singer Cecil Grant heard Roy Brown sing Good Rockin' Tonight during a break at a small club in New Orleans. He was so taken with the song, he called the owners of De Luxe Records and had Brown sing the song over the phone. Brown was quickly signed with the label and recorded the song at J&M Studio with producer Cosimo Matassa.
