    BMA's Mahakan mess

    News, Postbag, Published on 21/01/2017

» It is with deep disappointment that we have read Peerawat Jariyasombat's strangely ill-informed article, "A lesson in development" (BP, Jan 16, 2017). In a move that seems calculated to pander to the greed of developers rather than nurture the human resources represented by local populations, Khun Peerawat hails the efforts of Korean authorities to replace an existing population with an artist colony, but says nothing about the fate of the original residents.

    Bad flood dreams

    News, Postbag, Published on 20/05/2017

» Not surprisingly the better part of Bangkok flooded during the heavy rain in the early morning of May 16 and it looks like the BMA once again was caught off guard. We live in the Bang Na area just opposite Central City and since the last rainy season ended all the equipment used to pump out water has just been left without any sign of regular maintenance. Suddenly required, the BMA will have to get hold of technicians, required spares, operators, etc.

    A truly great monarch

» Today is indeed a sad day, a day on which we will bid farewell to Thailand's beloved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

    Would late King agree?

    Oped, Postbag, Published on 04/11/2017

» It seems to me that these people who are irritated by outsiders' criticism of that spectacular funeral are thinking of the wrong people. In my opinion, they should be thinking about the late King and what he would have wanted. Would he have wanted an extravagant hugely expensive spectacle that brought a lot of criticism of this country or would he have wanted a much more lower-key, humble and less conspicuous ceremony?

    Future backwards

    News, Postbag, Published on 30/04/2019

» My impression is that Khun Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit symbolised the hopes and aspirations of many young people in this country. It saddens me that there seems to be a very concerted effort to sideline him and therefore nullify the votes of a lot of young, idealistic and optimistic people.

    The Power of one

    News, Postbag, Published on 03/06/2019

» Re: "King Power wins contract bid", (BP, June 1). Is there anyone the least bit surprised that King Power has "won" another 10-year monopoly to operate the duty-free shops at Suvarnabhumi airport?

    Not-so-fake news

    News, Postbag, Published on 17/08/2019

» While it is certainly a true fact, as all facts are, that there is a very real danger of fake news laws being abused to further suppress the ability of domestic Thais to accurately understand Thai affairs -- whether Thai history, society or politics -- there is a more salient danger. This greater danger is rightly suggested when the editor writes of the army chief that his "claims are not backed by verifiable facts".

    Thank you, 'Mali San'

    News, Postbag, Published on 24/08/2019

» We Thais owe many, many thanks to "Mali-San" or Ms Megumi Morimoto, 46, a freshman at Kasetsart University's Sakolnakorn campus. As shown by the clip on Facebook by Udomsak Nak-chang-in and on television, she's been blocking motorcyclists from illegally riding their bikes on the sidewalk at Rumsalee intersection, thus protecting pedestrians from being run over. She's done this over 100 times. Although local bikers have beaten her up four times, Thai onlookers have rescued her.
