    Headlines are disappointing

Life, James Hein, Published on 22/11/2023

» If you have been in any way involved in social media over the past few years, there will be words that immediately have you wondering if the headline is in any way real. My favourite recently was "SpaceX Launched REAL UFO In ISRAEL! HAMAS And Iran Shocked!" on YouTube.

    Samsung's future flex

Life, James Hein, Published on 26/05/2021

» So whatever happened to the rollable displays we were promised some time back? Turns out companies like Samsung have been working on them, presenting a few at the recent Society for Information Display (SID) annual exhibition. The key to this technology is the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display because it doesn't need a backlight. This allows for paper thin, flexible displays. In keeping with their usual nomenclature, Samsung calls their first device the S-foldable. Their range starts at phone size and unfolds twice to a 7.2-inch screen. They also presented a slidable screen that pulls out to give a wider view. Then came the 17-inch foldable screen that starts as a tablet that can be used as a small monitor tagged as the "Carrying Small Seeing Big". For now, these are concept devices that we should see in the wild next year. Not to be outdone, LG demoed a 65-inch rollable OLED TV along with a 12.8-inch rollable device. China is also in the mix with Visionox showing their rollable OLEDs.

Users won't flip for Samsung's new phone

Life, James Hein, Published on 26/02/2020

» There is a lot of interest in the new Samsung Galaxy flip phone. It's cheaper than the last model, not a difficult target. As mentioned previously it opens like the old flip phones, not like a book. The hinge is better, as is the dust protection, but with this design you will always be swiping your finger across the fold. It is no larger than a regular smartphone so that wow of a bigger screen is not there anymore. At the price point I just can't see how this is an attractive unit to get.

    Fuzzy logic and online translations

Life, James Hein, Published on 07/09/2016

» In the IT world it is very important to get things exactly right, unless of course you are dealing with fuzzy logic. If your banking system, for example, is out by a decimal place, this can lead to some very unhappy customers or some very happy ones and a less than happy bank. There are many areas where calculations and units of measure are vital, just ask one of the Mars exploration landing teams.

4K may save the day for Blu-ray

Life, James Hein, Published on 24/08/2016

» As I predicted a number of years back Blu-ray discs never really made it into the market in the same way that DVDs did. With the advent of 4K that may change, or at least the Blu-ray industry is hoping that it will. It turns out that 288,000 4K Ultra Blu-ray discs were sold in the first half of 2016. The 4K discs were only released last year and they are only worth it if you have a 4K Blu-ray player and a TV to match. According to the British trade association BA, a third were sold between October and Dec as gifts so looking for a trend at this point is hardly conclusive. Since to take advantage of the technology means replacing major components in your home entertainment system, then I expect it will be as slow as the original Blu-ray to be adopted. Given the TV world is not transmitting in 4K this may provide some temporary boost but I don't see it being a major one. Also to keep you confused most "4K" TVs sold are actually Ultra HD (3840x2160) and not 4K (4096x2160).

    Look before loading

Life, James Hein, Published on 01/06/2016

» Loading a couple of Android apps on the new tablet, I was about to load Facebook before I stopped to read the permissions required, something unnecessary if you use a PC. The list is 56 items long and reading through them it seemed to be about the same as holding your computer out in the street and saying: "Take me". One question I have is: "How many people actually read the required-permissions list?" Some scary permissions you might miss include "Find accounts on the device" and "Send email to guests without owner's knowledge". Then there is "Read your text messages", "Modify or delete contents of your USB storage", "Record audio" and "Full network access".

    New year, new iPhone rumours

Life, James Hein, Published on 13/01/2016

» What would the week be without more rumours about an upcoming iPhone? Even though a new Apple phone isn't due out until September, speculation is already flowing rapidly. It will of course be called the iPhone 7, no surprises there. It will come in two sizes, just like the 6 range, allowing those users afraid of the larger screens to remain calm. It will have a better CPU and be a tiny bit thinner. It probably won't have an AMOLED screen but will have a better battery. The most interesting rumour is the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack to be replaced with a wireless lightening port. This will instantly disconnect a plethora of current devices from the phone and increase revenues for Apple iPhone-only peripheral products, including headphones. So far not even the predictions are encouraging, but it is very early days yet.

Crackdown on torrents is not the right way forward

Database, James Hein, Published on 28/04/2010

» It is that time again where the powers that be, in this case in the UK, are trying to crack down on torrents. I can understand this from the movie and music industries’ limited point of view because they believe that they are losing billions of dollars, or in this case pounds. I can also see the government’s perspective; they want protect industries. I can even understand the downloader’s and sharer’s point of view in the UK. as they get charged twice as much as the US for most media products.
