Casual vibes

Guru, Nimarta Narang, Published on 20/10/2017

» The Setting: Tucked away in the residential area of Sukhumvit Soi 52, 4K Cafe isn't the most convenient to get to by car. But X2 (cross-to) Vibe Bangkok Sukhumvit Hotel offers a shuttle to pick you up from BTS On Nut Station. The hotel's modern and chic exterior may seem a little out of place for its shophouse neighbours but it is pleasant to the eyes. Once you enter the ground floor, there is a kick-boxing sandbag just before the bar that leads to 4K café. Chic and casual -- exactly the vibe 4K café is going for.

    Get very glen'd up

Guru, Nimarta Narang, Published on 03/11/2017

» The Setting: The moment you step into Pullman Bangkok King Power's Glen Bar, you can tell it's grand. The high ceiling, the mixture of low and high tabletops with sofas and eclectic chairs, along with dark mood lighting makes for a classy yet fun ambience. It's the sort of place you can bring your S/O or friends out for a nice night out or for casual after-work drinks. The setting is also dotted with various traditional Thai objects that go along with the bar's "very Thai" theme, such as a ranat ek next to a DJ's booth, a wall filled with fancy jars of ya dong and Thai sarongs draped over sofas. To top it all off, there are two live music performances every Thursday to Saturday night each week. It's a stylish place, alright, which makes us wonder whether the menu lives up to it.

    Setting sail

Guru, Nimarta Narang, Published on 10/11/2017

» Bangkok has its charms, and there have been plenty of people enticed by this city. Yuval Schwok is one of them. Having grown up in Paris with a liberal Jewish background, Yuval always had a strong desire to travel and seek adventure. He accidentally arrived in Bangkok 14 years ago, and never quite left as he has now lived here for 12 years. It is quite fitting then that his first project was called The Overstay — a hostel, music venue and creative space all in one offering more than a place to stay for travellers and visitors. But for the past three years, Yuval has also been developing a new project called Bangkok Island, a boat that is set to be a prime venue for music and art. He hopes for it to not be like any other boat cruise, but rather a destination for artists and live music. We had a chat with The Overstay's founder about his new project, the challenges he has encountered and his take on the event scene in Bangkok.

    Charoen cool

Guru, Nimarta Narang, Published on 17/11/2017

» We've all been through the traffic jams, the unbearable heat and the same old crowded shopping malls of Bangkok. Sure, they're always busy and there is always lots to do -- but city life can be as draining as it is exciting. Sometimes you just need to get away from all the congestion. And what better way to escape than a trip down to the river? The riverside along Charoen Krung Road is riddled with different art spaces and centres, some of which have been around for a while and others that are just opening up. We decided to take an excursion to six different spaces that offer art, music and even opportunities for a swim, all within walking distance from the river.
