    #ForbiddenPoll

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 02/02/2018

» Earlier this week, the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) Poll Director Dr Arnond Sakworawich, who had been in his job for only two weeks, resigned after his rector asked him not to publish the results of a nationwide survey that his team did on Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwon's ongoing watchgate. Bangkok Post reported that NIDA president deemed the poll unfair and untimely. Arnond cited lack of respect and academic freedom as his main reasons to quit. Kudos to him for doing this as he is actually pro-regime.

Potential legal trouble for Apple over old batteries

Life, James Hein, Published on 17/01/2018

» The first couple of weeks of 2018 have provided a series of revelations. It started with Apple finally confirming that they have been throttling the performance of their older phones. The official line is that they do this to ensure that as the batteries degrade, the retarding of performance ensures that their devices won't overheat. Some people weren't buying what Apple was shovelling, and there is a series of class-action lawsuits in the making.

    Xiaomi sale nets B11bn

Life, James Hein, Published on 22/04/2015

» In a recent Asian sale the Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi sold more than 2 million phones and a range of other electronic devices including over 200,000 MI Bands (like a FitBit). Leveraging off new deals in India they did all of this and more in a 12 hour period. Xiaomi was also smart enough to apply localisation features and add software relevant to the local markets to their phones, something others have often failed to do well. The total received for the sale over the period was around 11 billion baht across India, Malaysia and Indonesia.

New camera is weighing on my mind

Life, James Hein, Published on 24/09/2014

» I've had it for a while now so I finally decided to upgrade my SLR camera. After some research I decided on a Nikon D5300. Nikon, because that's the brand of the lenses and other camera accessories I already own; and the D5300 because it's lightweight and has all the latest features found in mid-range models. If I was going to match my old D200 I probably would've gone for the D7100 which has more knobs that I will ever need and is also a lot heavier.

Who killed off the Nokia phone?

    News, Published on 23/10/2014

» It seems to be a law in the technology industry that leading companies eventually lose their positions — often quickly and brutally. Mobile-phone champion Nokia, one of Europe's biggest technology success stories, was no exception, losing its market share in the space of just a few years. Can the industry's new champions, Apple and Google — not to mention titans in other tech sectors — avoid Nokia's fate?

    Smart shopping

Life, James Hein, Published on 09/04/2014

» I have been looking at tablets. It took me a long time to decide on a smartphone and when to buy it, and while my first was an O2, the first one I was happy with was the Galaxy S2. I now have the S3 and will be upgrading to the S5 probably a month or so after it is released to avoid the introductory high prices. Picking a first tablet is turning out to be a much harder exercise. The unit must have a good screen but also support for a memory card which cuts out everything Apple makes. Good battery life is essential as is light weight and this covers a good range of products. For the moment I have my eye on the Note 10.1 2014 model, but that could change over the next couple of months as new devices enter the market.

    News in the mobile world

Life, James Hein, Published on 06/11/2013

» Apple has outperformed the financial projections of Wall Street moneymen but income is still down. Earlier in the year, things were not looking so good but Apple had a strong finish on the back of the sale of their latest products and claimed that 340 million iPhones were sold. They also sold 14.1 million iPads last quarter and more than 4.6 million iMacs.
