    The indie experience

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/03/2019

» Sarinya Manamuti, Nicholas Hudso-Ellis and Wongsarond Menn Suthikulpanich, who designed the space at Sala Daeng, are the founders of Bangkok Screening Room. The contemporary cinema aims to serve as a platform for local independent filmmakers and films, as well as making non-blockbuster indie films and classics accessible. Having just concluded the Fem Film Festival, which screened movies highlighting struggles and accomplishments of women in honour of International Women's Day, Guru sat down with Sarinya and Hudso-Ellis to talk about Bangkok Screening Room.

    Screen stealers

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/09/2018

» It's not news that the Thai film industry is doing well and the films being produced are not just successful in Thailand, are also gaining recognition outside the country. Thai blockbusters, however, are the usual: rom-coms, comedies, horror movies, horror-comedies, with a few action movies thrown in for good measure. But these aren't the entirety of the movies being made in the Kingdom. Just last week, Manta Ray won an award at the Venice Film Festival. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of other Thai films that have not only gained recognition outside of Thailand but have also received awards.

    Thai pride

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/11/2019

» Thailand is well-known around the world for a number of things: beautiful beaches, great food and extremely friendly people, to name a few. It's also home to a variety of homegrown talent be it in the entertainment industry or elsewhere. Sure, you can probably name a bunch off the top of your head that people go gaga for right here in the country, but there's also a number of them who are pretty well-known internationally, some of whom you may not be aware of. Either way, these are people who are making their motherland proud and whose works are worthy to be celebrated. From make-up artists to cake designers, here are Thais who are getting recognition locally and internationally for their work.

» If you hadn't noticed, we're halfway through 2020 already. With everything that's happened the past six months, there's probably a lot of us dreading what the rest of the year holds. Restrictions have eased and events -- you know, those things were people get together and do stuff -- are being held again. This week, we've listed down a few that deserve a note in your calendar.

    Let there be light

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/12/2021

» As the holiday season ramps up, parts of Thailand are transforming into centres of celebration for Christmas and New Year. More accurately, there will be more IG-worthy places for a limited period of time. Malls have set up Christmas trees while a number of light installations around the country are set to give visitors a little light in the otherwise dark and difficult period we've all been through these past couple of months. If you're looking to visit one of these places for some holiday cheer but don't know where to start, Guru has you covered.

    The power of attraction

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/09/2021

» K-pop stans and Blinks across the world were sent into a frenzy when Blackpink's Lisa released her solo debut album, Lalisa, a few weeks ago. The internet quickly fell in love with its addictive beat and rhythm, but the accompanying music video featured more than just tantalising visuals drenched in neon lights -- it featured the Buri Ram native in a traditional Thai headdress and the Prasat Hin Phanom Rung.

    Let's get geeky

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 20/04/2018

» Whether you like it or not, geek is in. That's obvious from the plethora of superhero movies reigning at the box office and the TV series we follow and binge faithfully. And Bangkok isn't an exception. Geekiness is alive and well here in the Big Mango. That's pretty evident with the "letter" Major Cineplex released a few weeks ago that employees could use to give to their bosses to ask for the day off to watch Avengers: Infinity War (ours is already printed out and ready to go as well as our escape plan in case our boss chases us out of the office). Aside from that, Bangkok is going to show off its geek pride with a couple of events in the city. So ignite your lightsabers, produce 1.21 gigawatts, step into the Tardis, have your wands at the ready and sit in your captain's chair. Here are five events in Bangkok where geeks will thrive and fanboy/fangirl to the max.
