Time for a flood remedy
Oped, Editorial, Published on 10/09/2022
» Fears of a repetition of the 2011 epic flood will haunt city residents in the coming days as heavy rain leads to massive floods in the northern part of the capital and adjacent areas. While the current conditions do not match 2011's huge proportions, the reaction of City Hall does not inspire much hope. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) -- regardless of who is the elected or appointed governor -- has reacted to the flooding in the same manner that it did in past years.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/07/2018
» The monsoon season not only brings heavy rain showers but also makes your Bangkok life a tad more difficult. Not sure what I'm getting at? Read on and see if you agree (and commiserate) with me.

Same old excuses given for flooding - so fix them
Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 09/06/2015
» Back in mid-March when inner Bangkok was awash after unexpected heavy rain, city governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra foolishly shot off his mouth, telling his critics to "go live in the highlands" if they don't like being flooded.

Bad flood dreams
News, Postbag, Published on 20/05/2017
» Not surprisingly the better part of Bangkok flooded during the heavy rain in the early morning of May 16 and it looks like the BMA once again was caught off guard. We live in the Bang Na area just opposite Central City and since the last rainy season ended all the equipment used to pump out water has just been left without any sign of regular maintenance. Suddenly required, the BMA will have to get hold of technicians, required spares, operators, etc.

Hot and a little bit bothered in the UK
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/07/2022
» It seems a bit of a paradox to be sitting in Bangkok and reading about how hot it is in London. But this was the case last week when for the first time Britain experienced temperatures exceeding 40C. Heathrow Airport was the first to clock that magic number. Last time I was at Heathrow it was more like 4C.

Reckless development sows seeds of disaster

» As monsoon rains have struck the Mekong region recently, some countries have been hit hard by flooding. These disasters reflect the fact that the region's development projects have not fully recognised climate change impacts and so lack plans to deal with them.

Fretting over fishy business

» The government's decision to import fresh fish from a radioactive-contaminated area in Japan's Fukushima prefecture has raised alarm among consumer groups. Such concerns bring no surprise.

Costly clocks and other wasteful spending
Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 16/08/2013
» Compared with the 2.2 trillion baht high-speed trains mega-project and the 350 billion baht water management project, 15 million baht for the purchase of 240 LCD digital clocks by the office of the secretary-general of the parliament may seem insignificant.

Enjoying the delicate sound of thunder
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/10/2021
» Something you get accustomed to in Bangkok at this time of the year is the distant sound of thunder, Mother Nature's way of reminding us of her power and also not to forget the umbrella if we are going out. I emphasise "distant" because the "flash, bang wallop!" thunderclaps directly overhead can be extremely scary and dangerous. But observing thunder and sheet lightning from a comfortable distance can actually be quite relaxing, almost like listening to the timpani tuning up at the Albert Hall.

Flood blame for Aswin falls short of axe
News, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 19/10/2017
» When learning that Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang daringly announced he would take sole responsibility for the catastrophic flood that slammed most parts of Bangkok on Saturday morning, I thought he wouldn't make it to his first anniversary as head of City Hall this week.
