Correcting impressions, Apple news and a backup alternative

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/02/2017

» I bumped into one of my former students one evening last week travelling home on the BTS. As a computer engineer he is interested in technology and asked me about the AirPods. I took them out to chat. He told me that he had heard that they fell out easily. Not true, I said. Not once, even riding on the back of motorcycles through the Thon Buri sois has this happened.

Ordering a MacBook Pro; and Affinity Pro for Windows

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 16/11/2016

» Reporting on Apple is sometimes perverse. Only a few hours after last week's eXtensions column, Apple opened the doors on its Thai site and the MacBook Pro went on sale here. Although the US site still showed delays of four-to-five weeks, the time was two-to-three weeks for those ordering here.

iPhone proves it's in rude health

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 21/09/2016

» The iPhone 7 was released last week and carriers were reporting higher pre-orders than any iPhone before. Apple also put out several software updates last Wednesday. I spent all that day and part of Thursday catching up. Apps were being updated too, taking advantage of some of the new features. On Thursday, I was still finding out what was new and where some features had been hidden.

Anticipating updates at WWDC; expanding the usefulness of photos

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/06/2016

» Apple rumours are sprouting like daisies in the approach to WWDC: just a couple of weeks away. There may be one, or two, or three iPhone sizes, with one or two cameras. There is also sure to be a new screen type (we are told). The next iPhone, which will probably be announced then, should have the next A-series chip: the A10. This is the one that many predict could power a desktop class computer.

Sizing up the new, smaller iPad Pro

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 13/04/2016

» Towards the end of last week, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro went on sale, a few days after its release in major American and European markets. Initially, only the three Wi-Fi versions are available, but Wi-FI+Carrier models should be out in a week or two, depending on regulator approval. A similar delay occurred in 2014 when the iPad Air 2 was released.

Changing strategies with the iPad Pro

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 02/03/2016

» Last July, I was delighted with the arrival of the MacBook. Despite its 1.1GHz processor, it provided respectable performance, helped by the 8GB 1,600GHz RAM and the 256GB SSD. This was the same SSD as in my Mac mini. That has provided quite good performance, along with the 512GB SSD in my MacBook Pro. Both of those Macs also have 16GB RAM, so with all three devices, processor speed is not the main criterion for performance.

Updates in the approach to WWDC

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 03/06/2015

» In the eXtensions column last Wednesday, one of the applications I mentioned was Pixelmator. I wrote then that this was available for the Mac and the iPad. The next day (Thursday) the developers updated the iOS app making it Universal, so it now runs on the iPhone as well.

» As Apple has grown in the last few years there have been changes: good and bad. Locally, for example, the number of stores has increased in Bangkok and several cities in the provinces have retail outlets selling Apple products.

    It's Apple's Week!

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/09/2014

» I had made plans to watch the broadcast of last week's Apple event, which started at midnight Thailand time. The live feed was abysmal, with several breaks, making it hard to follow. Disruptions occurred both with the web feed and Apple TV; this frustrated users in several countries, so it was not a local bandwidth problem. At the time of writing, Apple has neither explained the poor video quality nor apologised.
