» The royal anthem is known as Pleng Sansern Phra Baramee, or "The Song that Praises the Glory of the King". This piece of music is 130 years old. It was the third national anthem of Siam for more than 40 years, from 1888 to 1933 -- the one prior to that was Britain's God Save The King/Queen with Thai lyrics.

» The man next door to the studio hanged himself last Wednesday. He did it while we were recording a radio show. It caused a commotion in the soi and resulted in a very healthy display of what the Thais call Thai moong, which is a group of locals standing rigid, faces not unlike extras from the Walking Dead, staring at the accident or, in this case, the dead body dangling from the second floor.

» The little province of Satun is situated way, way down at the bottom of the Thai map. It is as far south as you can go; the next stop is Malaysia, and indeed it was in that country that Satun first came to my attention more than 20 years ago.
