An adventure with Mamuang

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 09/09/2015

» The brand new Bangkok Citycity Gallery now has Thailand's most-loved illustrated darling, Mamuang, to mark its inception in the art arena. The day Wisut Ponnimit's work will be shown full-scale in Thailand has arrived at last -- and judging by the artist's "yeah-whatever-don't-make-life-complicated" mindset, you'd better pop in to see it before the exhibition ends in early October. The opportunity to see his mango-shaped little girl -- this time in the form of a choose-your-own-adventure maze, is possibly harder than trying to find Maroon 5 tickets, thanks to Wisut's constant tsunami of work for magazines, product endorsements and countless corporations.

DNCE the night away

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 15/08/2017

» You'd expect the crowd at DNCE to be younger -- I mean high-school young -- but it wasn't as young as many as expected. It's a school night, after all.

A flare of fantasy

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/10/2023

» Befitting the impressive scale and presentation that gallery ATT19 can always conjure, their current exhibition "An Orchard In A Box" is a showcase that brings together two of the buzziest names in Thailand's creative industry together. Multi-disciplinary design studio Vinn Patararin and Thai artist Phannapast "Yoon" Taychamaythakool have joined forces to create a visually-stunning showcase -- one that is filled with paintings, live art and digital projections to outfits with pop-up shoulders shaped like strawberries.

Feeling all right

B Magazine, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 26/08/2018

» There is a stillness -- borderline boring -- to Scrubb's chosen mode of visual expression. The constant of stony faces and stock-still poses that embellishes all of the band's album artwork, editorial photo shoots and magazine covers is bequeathed on us too, as Torpong "Ball" Chantabubpha and Thawatpon "Muay" Wongboonsiri laugh through gritted teeth that it is actually a strain for them to smile for the cameras or to assume the role of a dancing monkey.

Animal attraction

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 30/05/2016

» It's no secret that Jiraporn Wiwa's latest fiction, Sontisanya Flamingo (The Flamingo Treaty), is currently one of Salmon Book's bestsellers. The 34-year-old freelance writer has previously released illustrated essays that take you to the best markets and street-eats in Bangkok, as well as collections of short stories, but this novel lets readers savour her rich imagination in a fuller form, as Jiraporn fleshes out the complications between lovers and the fancies of a cat and flamingo striking up a fishy friendship.

» French photographer and scholar on Japanese visual culture Claude Estebe returns to Bangkok for his third exhibition at Toot Yung Gallery, which recently moved to Ekamai Soi 2. The revamped space is clean and simple, but his close-ups of iconic Japanese robots and merchandising toys stand out against the neutral grey walls more than ever.

Art in the balance

» There are no more than three dancers on the stage and even that feels a bit of a clutter for the On The Tightrope's director and choreographer Jitti Chompee.
