With Dickens, it was the best of times

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 12/02/2012

» As a nipper in England, I often went for walks with my father. If rain was threatening he would say: ''We'd better take a 'gamp', and would pick up an umbrella in the doorway.''

Welcome to the land of queues, please stand by

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/03/2012

» One thing the current immigration woes at Suvarnabhumi have highlighted is that no one likes to stand in queues, be it at airports, banks, buffets or bathrooms.

    Grim White House in-tray

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 04/11/2012

» When Barack Obama won the US presidential election four years ago, the BBC commented that when he took over from George W Bush _ a few months later he would be inheriting ''the in-tray from Hell''. It wasn't far off the mark. Certainly things haven't been a barrel of laughs for Mr President. But he can't complain: After all, he wanted the job.

You simply can't beat a good cup of tea

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 03/03/2013

» In a letter to ''Postbag'' during the week a reader attributed his mother's longevity partly to having a taste for ''expensive tea''. This is encouraging news, as I can't get started in the morning without a couple of cups _ OK, mugs _ of English breakfast tea, which definitely isn't cheap.

A great escape, or a comedy of errors?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/06/2013

» Every now and again you come across a story in Thailand that you couldn't make up if you tried. If you've been attempting to make sense of the case of the disappearing German ex-convict Carlo Konstantin Kohl, while under the escort of Australian civilian security guards at Suvarnabhumi airport, you will know what I mean. He is now back in custody, but it's one of those tales that grew more and more bewildering by the day.

Nice base, a shame about the submarines

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/10/2013

» Last weekend, it was announced that a spanking new submarine base would open at Sattahip next March. This is wonderful news and would be even more wonderful if Thailand actually had any submarines. Still, it is a step in the right direction for a navy that hasn't had an operational sub since 1951.

When whistling could be music to the ears

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/01/2014

» When all this stuff in Bangkok is finally over _ if it ever is _ there are going to be tens of thousands of people with a full command of that popular unmusical instrument, the whistle. But when the whistle-blowing stops, what are they going to do? They can't all become football referees. And most of those other cherished whistling jobs, such as train guards or car park attendants, already have long waiting lists. So we are going to have on our hands an awful lot of extremely frustrated whistle blowers.

Hello Dolly ... back where you belong

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/07/2014

» It was good to see Dolly Parton receive such an enthusiastic reception from the 150,000-strong crowd at the muddy Glastonbury festival last weekend. I am not a huge fan of country music, but have always appreciated Dolly as an entertainer and songwriter. I much preferred her own low-key version of I Will Always Love You, which she wrote, to Whitney Houston’s massive hit.
