Food for thought and deep pockets
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/12/2017
» Reading about the launch of Bangkok's first-ever Michelin Guide, I felt a little guilty having just consumed my own gourmet dish of baked beans on toast. A generous topping of grated parmesan cheese hardly lifted it into a creation that would win the approval of a Michelin bon vivant. Anyway, congratulations to all the restaurants that get a mention, even though I can't afford them. I wonder if any of them do a chip butty or mushy peas?

Sunken 'ghost ship' could haunt Gulf fish
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/01/2022
» The week began promisingly with the discovery of a mystery "ghost ship" drifting in the Gulf of Thailand with no crew, cargo or documents aboard -- not even any defiant rodents. First spotted by Chevron oil-rig workers, the dilapidated Fin Shui Yuan 2, appeared to be a freighter of Chinese origin. Unfortunately, the vessel sunk in rough seas off the Nakhon Sri Thammarat coast while being towed towards land by the Thai Navy.

French learn about their Aussie 'mates'
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/09/2021
» It is encouraging to learn that it is not just Thailand that gets into deep water involving contracts over submarines. France is most upset with Australia for pulling the plug on a nuclear submarine deal, resulting in various shades of not-so-diplomatic name-calling. Standing out was the rather poignant observation from the recalled French ambassador to Australia that "what makes me sad is that we thought we were mates but we were stabbed in the back".

A fond farewell to my little furry friend

Something of a mixed bag at the supermarket
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/12/2018
» I nipped into the local supermarket last Tuesday to see if it was abiding by the promise not to use plastic bags in celebration of Thai Green Day. I was pleasantly surprised that the usual sea of plastic bags were not decorating the checkout counters. There was also a notice encouraging customers to use their own bags.

Sun almost set on those Page 3 girls
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/01/2015
» For a moment it looked like the British national media had finally become nipple-free after more than 40 years. For the first three days of last week The Sun’s Page 3 girl, normally topless, was actually wearing clothes, prompting insiders and other newspapers to speculate that a decision had finally been made to drop the much-criticised daily dose of titillation.

It's hard to beat a munchy, crunchy Thai bug
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/10/2014
» The most important news of the week is that Thailand is now the world's largest producer of edible insects, with 20,000 insect farms operating in the kingdom. On occasions my bedroom feels like one of the farms, with assorted weird UFOs buzzing around.
