A very veggie delight

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 10/11/2017

» The setting: Alright, this doesn't really bring to mind a fancy wine and dine joint and it certainly isn't gourmet. But given that it was just vegetarian festival, we thought we'd represent a bit. Veggie Chef is what you're more likely to call street food; except, it's in an air-conditioned shophouse; it's MSG free and it's also completely vegan friendly. It's a bit of a way out of central Bangkok as it's quite close to Don Mueang Airport, yet we'll have you know that people with some hours to kill before their next flight will actually leave the airport to come to this joint, just because it's that good. Think of it as a no-frills vegan joint giving off a street food vibe, serving the most authentic tasting Thai food that's actually better than your regular Thai food because it's super healthy.

    Songkran in 2097

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 14/04/2017

» Songkran, Songkran, Songkran. We know what you're all about. Thousands of stories are written about you every year. Stories of the good deeds done; the hottest water guns; who was fined B100 for showing more skin than deemed appropriate and how many gallons of the not-to-be-named-liquid-that-causes sheer-and-utter-inebriation was consumed over the New Year... we've been celebrating Songkran for years so we know the drill.

A North Fest you won't forget

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 24/02/2017

» Oozing the same appeal as a vampiric rock God and donning picture-perfect porcelain skin that would make any woman green with an envy, actor/singer and famed Thai celeb Dome Pakorn Lam was answering floods of calls about his new project in Chiang Mai when we sat down to interview him. This is one celeb that means business. Completing his look was an army green barber jacket and black jeans that had chains dangling from the sides; we thought this fashion trend had died down years ago but somehow Dome made it hot again. We got to grips with Dome's true passion in life, music, and what he's doing right now to fulfil this passion.

    Pre-game for Wonderfruit

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 03/02/2017

» Alright guys, the Siamese fields of wonderment are no longer a figment of our imagination, they are in fact a reality fast approaching. Winter is gone. In fact, it never came. But that's beside the point. Wondefruit is coming. Wonderfruit is almost here. You know, that festival we've been waiting for since last year? Yes, that one.

Because at Mystic Valley, there's a stage for everyone. So long as you're into electronic music, or hip hop, that is. If you're into country, best to leave this one out sweetheart.

    Toro, today and tomorrow!

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 14/10/2016

» The Setting: With a name like Toro, you might expect medieval looking (and smelling) walls draped with bull heads, men boasting bare tattooed arms, floors covered in hay, waiters dressed in red running for their lives and other bits of evidence pointing towards man's obsession with the blood sport of bull fighting. Or maybe we got a bit carried away there, whoops. Toro Bangkok is far from all that, thankfully. Being the last of the restaurants we'll have visited in the upper floor of the courtyard, we certainly mean what we say when we declare it to be our favourite.

    Directing Twelve Angry Men

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 07/10/2016

» Loni Berry, the man behind Bangkok's multicultural, English speaking theatre, Culture Collective, is set to be putting on Twelve Angry Men towards the end of this month, the first of a string of plays the theatre will be staging this season. We're uber keen to see what he's got up his sleeve for this one, considering his Lisbon Traviata won Best Production at the 2015 Bangkok Theatre Festival. And personally, we did love his musically witty Death of Miss America. From Asian stereotypes and homosexuality, to nudity, Berry's performances always tackle prickly topics that make viewers stop and think. We thought it's wise to dig a little deeper into the artistic director who's making such great, mind-altering and risky moves for theatre in Bangkok.

    Halloween in Hong Kong

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 07/10/2016

» Alright, October is upon us. It's time to drop the H word. H... well hell, a month ago we would have hated saying it! Truth is, we were never really the biggest fans of the tooth decaying celebration Americans call Halloween. And let's be honest, these days, the majority don't dress up in the true spirit of the occasion; it's blatantly become more about how many people you can impress with that rocking hot bod. Come on, admit it. You can't lie to Guru.

    Smokin' hickory!

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 07/10/2016

» Well, we do feel rather bad, but it definitely wasn't Vegetarian Festival when we visited Hickory, a smoking hot barbecue restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 11 that cohabits a space with the jazzy Wolff's Bar. And somehow classy cocktails, walls adorned with pictures of the all-time jazz-favourites and Bourbon flavoured ribs work really well together.
