The indie experience

» Sarinya Manamuti, Nicholas Hudso-Ellis and Wongsarond Menn Suthikulpanich, who designed the space at Sala Daeng, are the founders of Bangkok Screening Room. The contemporary cinema aims to serve as a platform for local independent filmmakers and films, as well as making non-blockbuster indie films and classics accessible. Having just concluded the Fem Film Festival, which screened movies highlighting struggles and accomplishments of women in honour of International Women's Day, Guru sat down with Sarinya and Hudso-Ellis to talk about Bangkok Screening Room.

Welcoming a new decade!

» For those of you who may have missed it, we are in a new decade. Yes, you read that right. No, you are not hallucinating. Yes, we are all old. Welcome to the beginning of the 2020s where films like Back To The Future and Blade Runner are not just classics but the future worlds depicted in them are now effectively in the past; where years like 2050 and 2060 no longer sound ridiculous like they did back in the early 2000s and where those born in 2000 are 20 years old. It's a lot to take in, that's for sure. With every new year also comes the declarations of "New year, new me" posted all over social media and vocally announced at dinner tables everywhere. Resolutions are made and kept for a good two weeks or so before being thrown out the window. So instead of trying to expect things to happen that we aren't even sure will happen, let's take a look at the stuff that we're fairly certain will happen this year. Here's a couple of things to look forward to this 2020.

Not your mama's movies

» It's that time of the year when summer blockbusters are about to invade the cinemas. And while we're stoked to see superheroes swing into action or travel the open seas with an inebriated pirate, there are times when we just want to get away from all the CGI-ness of big budget films. Enter Bangkok Underground Film Festival, a place where you can enjoy local indie films, short films and discover new filmmakers. The films screened here are not necessarily the typical ones you'll be used to watching. Therefore, if you're after mainstream films, then perhaps you should go watch some lifeguards running in slow motion instead. Go figure.

» 2021 is finally here and we can finally put "The Year That Must Not Be Named" behind us! Though we're not entirely out of the woods yet, the fact remains that a new year means we can turn a new leaf and look forward to the things yet to come this year. » If you hadn't noticed, we're halfway through 2020 already. With everything that's happened the past six months, there's probably a lot of us dreading what the rest of the year holds. Remember when we were so happy in 2019 that a new year was around the corner? Things are looking up as we move forward. Restrictions have eased and events -- you know, those things were people get together and do stuff -- are being held again. This week, we've listed down a few that deserve a note in your calendar.

» Coronavirus -- you've been hearing about it, reading about it, but knock on wood you haven't been infected by it. The world has been sent reeling these past few months because of the virus. Everyone is in a state of panic. Masks are in short supply, sneezing in public places garners dirty looks and everyone is convinced they're living in Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation is behind it all (get the Resident Evil reference?). But let's all chill for a sec, which may be difficult to do given the circumstances, but we need to get our facts straight which, apparently, is hard for the Thai Ministry of Public Health to do. Let's talk about Covid-19 and how it affects us in Thailand.

» Thailand is well-known around the world for a number of things: beautiful beaches, great food and extremely friendly people, to name a few. It's also home to a variety of homegrown talent be it in the entertainment industry or elsewhere. Sure, you can probably name a bunch off the top of your head that people go gaga for right here in the country, but there's also a number of them who are pretty well-known internationally, some of whom you may not be aware of. Either way, these are people who are making their motherland proud and whose works are worthy to be celebrated. From make-up artists to cake designers, here are Thais who are getting recognition locally and internationally for their work.

A summer of fun

» Summer is here -- like that's not at all obvious. As the heat bears down on all of us Bangkokians, the temptation to simply spend these hellish days locked up in our rooms with the AC turned high (or is it low? You get what I mean) while we cuddle in our blankets and binge hours and hours on end of Netflix shows is strong. But that doesn't have to be the case. There's still a bunch of enjoyable things to do around the city despite the heat. In fact, they're not only fun, but they're perfect things to during the summer time. So stop being a lazy bum, get off that couch and outta the house, and don't worry, you can still have your ice cream. Here's a few summer activities to get you up and going during this heatwave.

» As the holiday season ramps up, parts of Thailand are transforming into centres of celebration for Christmas and New Year. More accurately, there will be more IG-worthy places for a limited period of time. Malls have set up Christmas trees while a number of light installations around the country are set to give visitors a little light in the otherwise dark and difficult period we've all been through these past couple of months.
