    Parading 'Thainess'

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 15/06/2016

» Last year, it was the tuk-tuk dress for the Miss Universe contest, hailed as innovative and also raising eyebrows for its curious design. This year, the original idea for the national costume to be worn by our beauty queen at the Mrs Universe pageant caused giggles rather than uproar: a Suwanna Chedi dress, or imagine our contestant wearing a golden pagoda on her body. The organiser decided to scrap it after much public ridicule, and on Monday unveiled a new design based on pla tapien, or a tropical carp-like fish.

    Real loan lessons

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 06/08/2018

» Education and morality are not a given duo package. It infuriates me to write this, but apparently, having a good education by no means ensures that a person will turn out to have more-or-less sound morals. Which is ironic, because shouldn't all that education have gotten it across somewhere that paying for your education bills is what makes for some of the most basic requirements to being a decent human being?

    Seal your memories

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 15/12/2016

» With the recent passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, various printing houses have toiled to produce beautiful articles, keepsakes and tributes to the revered monarch. During the past two months, newspapers featured extensive coverage, as well as historical pictures of the late king, some of which were rare and hard to find. Such publications have (thankfully) brought back interest to printed word and has set a flourish of readers eager to get their hands on whatever the press reels out. A picture is, after all, worth a thousand words.

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that bling

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 29/10/2015

» 'More, more, more!" What else could you expect the feistiest hotshot designer of the moment to say, in reference to the bling that goes on the clothes he designs? If Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing could have it all his way, the brand's collaboration collection with H&M would see "really, really high heels", shorter skirts and a lot more golden buttons. But thanks to the balance that H&M insists on, for universal appeal's sake, wearability is ensured, especially for us low-key folk who don't usually make it out alive on the high-fashion horse.

    Take the long way

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 18/02/2015

» Before the Thai-Chinese population can get to holidaying and frolicking tomorrow, the main deed to be taken care of today is that of paying respects to ancestors. Only after one has passed that checkpoint, with all the incense, firecrackers and greasy food in between, does the celebrating begin. Although she was born in Thailand, my mother is a second-generation Teochew immigrant, meaning her upbringing was influenced by Chinese traditions. Like any heritage-respecting Thai-Chinese person, she is expected to be at her sister's house today, where the ceremonies to commemorate their late parents will take place.

    Robots to taste-test Thai food

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 31/10/2014

» Leave it to the electronic tongue and nose to distinguish how deliriously delicious or insanely crappy a certain tom yum tastes. If Thai food is to have a distinctive uniform recognised by the whole world, well, a standard's got to start somewhere right?

    Lost for words

    Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 20/05/2013

» I still remember the day Chai came back to class after meeting a girl during our gap hour when we were still in college. Pat was her name. She had perfectly light, fair skin and she was decked out in pearl earrings, a costly print scarf and a status handbag, according to his description.
