Blasts from the past with Thai film posters

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 08/07/2022

» Thai posters of Hollywood films have rightfully gained something of a cult following (movie pun intended). They are an art form in their own right since Thai artists took the liberty of creating local versions of famous Hollywood films and reimagined them in a new light by hand, often adding key moments from the plot almost to the point of revealing spoilers as opposed to the subtle approach of their originals, which depicted just enough to pique your curiosity.

    No-flipping required

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/02/2020

» What do you get when you cross UFO, Yanbian-style barbecue, no-flipping grills and a lot of wordplay? BADBQ in Siam Square Soi 9 is the answer! To the best of my knowledge, this casual joint is the first and only in Thailand to offer a Yanbian-style barbecue, Yanbian being the autonomous prefecture in China with a large number of ethnic Koreans. This has resulted in the cuisine being a fusion of Chinese and Korean.

    Swedish express

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/10/2016

» I found out last week you don't have to go all the way to the eighth kilometre of Bang Na-Trat Road for some Swedish flavours. Well, you don't even have to step out of your house for that matter. Mammas Kök, or mum's kitchen, brings homemade Swedish food from its location in Klong Toey, right to yours. I quickly called them up since I couldn't be bothered with dealing with all the traffic just so I could sink my teeth into a juicy meatball. #priorities.

    Peruvian express

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 23/09/2016

» While we can count the restaurants in Bangkok that serve Peruvian food on one hand, we hadn't come across one Peruvian food delivery... until last week. And, boy, were we glad to have found it. Although Sabores (Spanish for flavours) from Peru has a modest online following, some further scrolling down revealed it had participated in latin food festivals and catered for many events. We decided to take a gamble and ended up hitting quite the jackpot.

    On a high note

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/12/2015

» What’s better than one good restaurant? Three good ones combined, baby! Highball Black Garden is a joint concoction between Johnnie Walker and three well-known restaurants — Hyde & Seek Peek-a-Boo, 1881 by Water Library and Tales of Gold Mine — all of which are located inside Groove, a dining hub on the ground level of CentralWorld. As its name suggests, it focuses on pairing food with highballs containing Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky. This pop-up venue is where you can enjoy an alfresco dinner lit up by strings of decorative Christmas lights wrapped around trees. The director’s chairs are more comfortable and roomy than they look (unless you’re booty-blessed like Kim or Nicki). There are some props with which to spruce up your IG moments, such as a top hat to help you look like a gent and a statue of the Johnnie Walker himself. A large, black backdrop is also available for group photos.

» Are flowers food? Yes and no. In the hands of Purida "Chef Pu" Theeraphong, the new corporate chef of Osha, you'll be surprised at how palatable petals can be. With 17 years of experience in restaurants in Australia and Thailand, chef Pu introduces a flower-inspired Thai dinner, called "Osha-The Floral Set" , commemorating her joining the Osha team.

    Good times at Yoka Yoka

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 30/10/2015

» Yoka Yoka, which is Fukuoka’s local dialect for “good”, for the most part lives up to its name. The modern Japanese restaurant is located at Ruamrudee Village, a small hub of good restaurants for the after-work crowd. Yoka Yoka occupies two floors, each with a different mood. On the ground floor, the inviting wooden interior seems to be set for a more low-key dinner, where you can enjoy your meal in peace and quiet. The upper level, on the other hand, is cooler, featuring a sake bar, funky artwork, brick walls and concrete columns. There are two private rooms, one with a private balcony, that are perfect for a reasonably rowdy gathering with friends.

    Meet the Forkers

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/08/2015

» Forkers, a food truck specialising in pasta, has been popping up at various events since January. It’s the brainchild of six partners, one being chef Phoom, who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Dusit and runs restaurant i-Taste, on Sathon Soi 8. So rest assured, there’s no substituting ketchup for tomato sauce here.
