» Alarming reports are coming from Washington about the highly anticipated Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report. It seems that US officials have been ordered to promote Malaysia from Tier 3, the bottom ranking where Thailand was controversially placed last year. The reports - not denied by US officials - say Malaysia's rise back to Tier 2 was for purely political reasons, because President Barack Obama needs Malaysia's support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade negotiations.

» The conversion of Aung San Suu Kyi from human rights champion to defender of military violence has been painful to watch. The Myanmar leader capped her change last week. At a UN-sponsored conference in Hanoi, she sloughed off questions about the brutal expulsion of 700,000 Rohingya, who now are refugees. Shockingly, she defended the imprisonment of two Myanmar reporters by praising a law written by colonialists to intimidate and punish her own country's citizens.

» As the globe marked World Press Freedom Day yesterday, journalists were commemorating the one-year-anniversary of dual suicide bombings in Kabul which killed nine of their colleagues. Meanwhile, separate attacks in Khost and Kandahar at about the same time killed another two journalists as well as dozens of civilians. In addition to mourning, the media community also conveyed its enduring respect for these journalists who had risked their lives on a daily basis to report the news.
