    Thai-Style Xmas

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/12/2021

» Despite the fact that a majority of the Thai population claim to be Buddhists, they go all out to celebrate Jesus Christ's birthday every year. Even though they may not be aware that it's his birthday and Xmas isn't even an official holiday despite all the lights and Christmas trees that pop up across the country. I've gone down Bangkok Post's archive (Xmas pun intended) to present a few quirky and local twists on the worldwide holiday. While they may not be unique to Thailand, they are definitely memorable. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Possibly time to look on the bright side

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/01/2018

» Having just about scraped through the Year of the Chicken, here we are seven days into 2018 and wondering what's in store during the Year of the Dog. It probably won't be all that great, but we'll leave the gloom and doom to the experts. Let's just hope it's a least a bit more enjoyable than the past couple of years which have really been quite awful, and almost of an annus horribilis nature.

    Thailand through the looking glass

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/01/2017

» Well, here we are on the first day of a brand new year. It is customary at this time for newspaper columnists and other bores to predict what's going to happen in the world in the coming 12 months. Let's just hope it's a bit more cheery than the past year, which has been quite awful.

Creatures great and small, bless them all

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/09/2018

» At the end of this month Dusit Zoo, better known as Khao Din, is shutting its gates after 80 years. Its 1,300 residents are moving to temporary accommodation in six provincial zoos until their new home opens in Pathum Thani in another three years. Moving can be quite a traumatic experience for animals, and we wish them all well.

Betting on bugs can be bit of a gamble

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/10/2015

» The most important news last week was undoubtedly a dramatic police swoop on a beetle fight in the northern province of Phrae. The eagle-eyed cops were so pleased with this successful raid they even held a press conference in which they announced to crime reporters that they arrested three men, confiscated two beetles and seized the grand sum of 100 baht, allegedly used for gambling purposes.

Sometimes you just have to queue up

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/06/2014

» The mad scramble at some of the free showings of King Naresuan 5 at certain cinemas in the past week shows to what lengths people will go in their current pursuit of “happiness”. Some ladies were even spotted running the wrong way up escalators in their efforts to get a precious freebie. The last time such mayhem was witnessed was when they announced the buffet was open at a recent hotel wedding reception, prompting a stampede worthy of The Charge of the Light Brigade.
