Pedro Almodovar celebrates life in all its messy turns

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 23/11/2021

» Pedro Almodovar's films turn camp into art, or art into camp. Or even better, he isn't bothered all that much whether the candy-coloured hijinks, the sexual anything-goes, the carnal perfidy and maternal heartbreak in his movies are a form of art or a celebration of camp. And we, the audience, shouldn't either. Almodovar, the internationally best-known Spanish filmmaker, thrives on something much simpler, I think. Freedom.

    An imperfect world

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 21/05/2019

» Even on the ground at the Cannes Film Festival, what people seemed to be anticipating most on Monday was, well, the final episode of Game Of Thrones. No, it wasn't being shown at the festival (how unbecoming that would be), but isn't it a sign of our times that a TV episode has the Valyrian-steel nerve to dominate global discussion and upstage the world's biggest film showcase?

    Sometimes transcendental, always relevant

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 25/05/2018

» The American films were on short supply this year at Cannes -- which in turn deprived the assembly line of red carpet material -- but nobody seemed to mind that except, well, some American media and fashion bloggers. That superfluous caveat aside, the recently wrapped 71st Cannes Film Festival was nearly unanimously praised as one of the best editions in recent memory, with a string of good, sometimes very good, titles playing night after night -- and even the bad films weren't so offensively bad, as was often the case. In the midst of soul-searching following the question of relevance (the world wants Avengers), the rise of streaming (the world watches films on phones), the decline of arthouse popularity, Cannes insists on the sacredness of cinema, on the future of the art, and this year it paid off solidly.

The Faustian promise in a blaming game

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 16/12/2017

» Through a tangled web of pride, vanity, moral superiority, Nietzschean negativity, Faustian promises and pseudo-Jedi cool, the junta keeps to its playbook by blaming everyone except themselves.

At Cannes, humour makes a surprise visit

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 01/02/2017

» Humour is hardly ever associated with Cannes competition films -- to win the Palme d'Or, for example, it's assumed a film should possess art house gravitas, serious humanity, or weighty, topical, discourse-stimulating subject matter (last year's winner, Dheepan, is about immigrants in Paris, and before that, the three-hour-long Turkish drama Winter Sleep).

Say yes to Chilean film No

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 05/02/2016

» A film screening at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) tomorrow couldn't be more timely. In a week that speculation over the timeline of the referendum on our draft charter has made several headlines, a movie about a referendum that will make or break a government arrives like serendipity. (It could be an omen, but let's not be cynical.)

Putting limits on freedoms to the test

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 21/09/2013

» Freedom is coveted, demanded, dreamt of, fought for, and yet elusive in practice and definition. The discrepancy in understanding what freedom is and entails is at the centre of our difficult times, or at one of the centres.

    Screen queen

Muse, Kong Rithdee, Published on 19/01/2013

» Firing off queries about beauty secrets is not what a male reporter, batting an eyelid, would normally do to a female subject. But since fact-checking is part of the job, let's get this done right from the beginning.
