    The hidden gateway

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 12/04/2012

» Hidden in a secluded narrow passage between the limestone cliff faces, sheltered beneath a towering natural arch as tall as the mountains that conceal it from the outside world, the "ancient" Chinese way station down below not only looks as if it has always been there for centuries but also adds entrancing magic to this mystifying sanctum.

    Doi Suthep's dizzying delights

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 14/02/2013

» To me Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai has always been synonymous with downhill mountain-biking, and nothing else. Of course, every time I was on the truck that shuttled me and my bike up to the trailhead high on the mountain, I saw many cyclists spinning their way up to the top. I wished I could do that too but I knew full well I would drop dead even before I finished the first kilometre. However, on my recent visit to the northern city, my view was changed.

Chet Khot's makeover provides playtime for all levels

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 25/07/2013

» Chet Khot-Pong Kon Sao Nature Study Centre in Kaeng Khoi, Saraburi, is one of the two DH destinations within a two-hour drive from Bangkok. Like Prachin Buri's Khao E-to, the other popular playground for downhill mountain bikers from the capital city, the trail at Chet Khot has already been featured in this column. But, trust me, there is a very good reason I have to write about it again.

    Riding the roof of Tak

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 13/11/2014

» Although Doi Soi Malai is not an unfamiliar name to Thai travellers, only a minority of them have actually visited this 1,660m mountain, also known as the "roof of Tak province". Due to difficult access, especially during the wet season, only 4x4 folks and motocross riders have made it to the top. Would mountain bikers be able to do that too?

Making tracks in the middle of nowhere

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 18/12/2014

» As a journalist for 25 years, I've travelled to many remote parts of the Kingdom. But rarely have I found myself in a place that made me feel as if I was "in the middle of nowhere". Recently, however, such a feeling surfaced. The cause was nothing else but mountain biking.

    The living, breathing museums

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 12/03/2015

» Using just his mouth and his left hand — the only one he has — Saengcharoen Thongkham adeptly worked a piece of plastic string around a mud crab wielding its powerful claws in a desperate attempt to fight back. It took the skilful crab catcher only a minute to securely tie it up. Amazed onlookers applauded with respect.

    Conquering a mountain

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 16/04/2015

» Viewed from its own top or from afar, the mighty Doi Luang Chiang Dao, the Kingdom's tallest limestone mountain, is always a majestic sight. Of course, you are not allowed to bike on the hiking trail in the upper parts of "the grand mountain of Chiang Dao". But in the lower, forest covered ridges surrounding it, there are numerous peaceful roads, both paved and unpaved, that you can explore on two wheels.

» In April, I wrote in this column about a mountain-biking trip to Pa Kia in Chiang Dao district, some 70km north of Chiang Mai city. Last week I got to ride in that beautiful area again.

Getting lost with my best friend

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/09/2015

» Travelling is never boring if you are accompanied by your best friend. That's why I often bring my bike along on road trips. Recently, on the way back from Mukdahan, the northeastern city on the border with Laos, I spared a half-day to explore Phu Mhu, a hill with scenic lookout points in Nikhom Kham Soi, which is just a short drive from the provincial capital, with my two-wheeled buddy.
