    Sushi supreme

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 17/10/2014

» While the arrival of another sushi restaurant in Bangkok might elicit groans instead of grins, Sushi Ichi is not your average semi-frozen fish dispenser. The Michelin-starred original incarnation exists in retail mecca Ginza in Tokyo, which conjures images of the famed Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant of Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary. Its basement setting is not unlike a Tokyo subway station location — a little unusual for Bangkok but completely normal in the homeland. The cosy dimensions are split into two rooms for 12 and 14 diners, with a narrow corridor connecting the two. The indirect lighting and ample use of hinoki wood (sourced locally) soften voices and light, transporting you seemingly far away from the bustling Ratchaprasong intersection just outside. An indirectly shared experience in the counter-style rooms, present during our lunch visit were well-dressed pairs of locals, execs eating alone and a Japanese couple that seemed right at home.

    Stylish new Silom

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 06/06/2014

» Just when we were positing the strange absence of more higher-end restaurants in the Silom area, Vesper appears on the scene right on queue. Nested among the street food stalls and Silom foot traffic, this European bistro-style eatery takes its name from a drink, a Bond girl and a Latin phrase meaning “evening ritual”, if one reference isn’t enough. The room is shaped like a square, and the low ceiling keeps things cosy (not as low as Eat Me, luckily), particularly towards the back of the room. A similar mood — perhaps a modern take on the tired Zanotti grandeur — can be experienced elsewhere in the city, such as Little Beast in Thong Lor, and we weren’t surprised to hear the co-owning couple at the helm — Choti and Debby — are also involved there. Back here, there’s enough space for 60 diners or so, with some bar stools for the more dedicated drinkers to marvel at the mixology.

    Sense and Sensi-bility

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 14/02/2014

» THE SET-UP: Engaging all the senses and sensibilities of the Bangkok dining scene is newcomer Sensi down in Sathon. It’s a house conversion on a sleepy soi of Narathiwat — an area with plenty of potential midway between Sathon and Asok. At the helm in the kitchen is 28-year-old Chef Christian Martena, poached from Italian stalwart Opus down in Silom (which also produced Chef Francesco from Medici at Hotel Muse) by his savvy business partners. His wife Clara is doing front of house, which creates a particularly homey feel, with a visit akin to an evening with the couple at their own home. They are willing hosts and it shows. Inside the house are well-spaced tables, enough for 54 pax, which might not be enough if its popularity continues to rise.
