    Sit down Sunday brunch

Life, Noel Maclean, Published on 05/12/2012

» Whatever the impression given by Bangkok hotels, nowhere is it written that a brunch must be a buffet. The key feature is a meal that segues from breakfast into lunch and combines the two. It's a concept that might make more sense, therefore, if you were to make a meal of your Sunday by starting your dining when you wake up after your lie-in around 10 am, say, and then just chill at the table through to mid-afternoon, nibbling on this and that while chit chatting with a procession of people. At that point one might ease oneself up to take a mild constitutional to get the circulation going again, burn off some calories and move into a different phase of the day, catching a movie, cruising the mall or hitting the links once conditions get cooler.

» From 14-34 floors above Beach Road, no further explanation than the half-moon, palm fringed bay is needed for Pattaya's perennial popularity among travellers from near and far. In golden afternoon sunshine, the sparkling salty turquoise expanse bears testimony to the efficacy of the seaside city's expensively procured water treatment infrastructure, as do not a few stick figures bobbing around colourful buoy-bordered swim areas cordoned off against darting jet ski bounders and bouncing speedboats trailing high-holstered paragliders or fast-ferrying day-trippers to pristine isles on the near horizon.

In the zone away from home

» Nowhere is Bangkok's confidence in its future more evident these days than down by the river, especially in the neighbourhoods of the skytrain stations and bridge that now also put the Thonburi side, the city's original temple precinct, on the mass transit map. Some of the most euphoric condo concepts in the city are taking shape there on both banks, along with upscale mall projects, including a new Paragon, surging ahead with the ambition of chaneling the surging affluence.
