Delicately Thai

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 14/10/2016

» Growing up in Thailand, I was never really fond of our traditional desserts. The combination of coconut and undisguised sugar -- cornerstones of Thai confection -- always hit me like a note too sharp for my bass range of creamy, chocolaty sweets. Why I wanted to give Wanlamun a try, nonetheless, is knowing that it comes from the same patissier behind the short-lived but sensational Let Them Eat Cake, the closure of which we are still crying over.

    Street dining made easy

» The Setting: Remember the Weasley's deceptively roomy accommodation for the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire? That was the image that popped into mind when we crossed the threshold of The Local Canteen. From its humble storefront in a pint-sized soi, you'd never imagine to find beyond the doorway, a skylit tunnel that seats nearly 70 diners.

» Hollywood is a truly fascinating global phenomenon. Just take, for instance, The Oscars. Every year, the whole world, so to speak, actively tunes in to ardently agree or disagree with America's ruling on the best factors of American movies.

    When 80% is an A+

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 12/02/2016

» A new nighttime eatery, owned by a pair of couples, has opened next to Charoen Krung's hip youth hub Old Town, sharing the enthusiasm for Bangkok's old town vibes. Its name, 80/20, is stylised on the facade in several ways. Searching for the restaurant at dinnertime, you'll first notice a small light box with the numbers in Thai digits, then "Eighty Twenty" in old school, golden lettering above a heavy set of wooden doors.

    Colder than ice

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 16/10/2015

» The name Eighteen Below, as you can probably guess, alludes to the exact subzero temperature at which the store's ice creams are kept. This temperature is, in fact, colder than the average -4C because the Hua Hin-originated shop does without a few components of typical commercial ice cream: artificial colours, flavour essences and emulsifiers.

    The charms of Asean

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 28/08/2015

» Charm (previously Charme de L’asie) may be among many fancy family restaurants inside EmQuartier’s Helix building, but the restaurant has a legitimate excuse to demand your attention. Although Bangkok is pretty much smack-dab in the middle of Southeast Asia, we seem so infatuated with cuisines from afar that there are barely any restaurants celebrating the culinary cultures close to us. Charm is one of the few places in town to bring Southeast Asian flare to the table in a comprehensive and authentic manner.
