Spare the outrage and act for animals
News, Editorial, Published on 02/08/2015
» Betty White has spoken: the loveable 93-year-old golden girl of television wants a pound of flesh from the man who killed, beheaded and skinned Cecil the lion. The long-time animal activist called the lion’s death “a heartbreaker” and added “you don’t want to hear some of the things I want to do to that man”. Consider it official, then, that Walter Palmer, 55, became the world’s most hated man of the week for successfully slaughtering the 13-year-old lion who was the pride of the Zimbabwean savannah.

News, Editorial, Published on 23/08/2015
» The Erawan bomber ghosted into the heart of Bangkok on Monday evening — took 20 lives in the blink of an eye — and disappeared just as swiftly into the night on the back of a motorcycle.

Facts will end rumours
News, Editorial, Published on 24/08/2015
» The national police chief has warned every citizen and resident to stop spreading rumours about last Monday's bomb attack, or face arrest. Given the lack of progress in finding out who is responsible for 20 murders and a Thai tragedy, it is understandable Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang is frustrated, tired and possibly testy.

Better checks on offenders needed
News, Editorial, Published on 20/12/2015
» The Office of Basic Education Commission issued a not very reassuring statement after a convicted paedophile was detected working at a Ubon Ratchathani school. Jumping to conclusions
News, Editorial, Published on 05/06/2017
» There is a certain familiarity about the spat between some officials in the Philippines after the calamitous midnight suicide attack on a Metro Manila resort last week. Most died from smoke inhalation in the fire set by the attacker at the Resorts World Manila complex not far from Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

News, Editorial, Published on 12/09/2017
» The official version of the "great escape" by ex-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra is coming apart. More importantly, the public is rapidly losing confidence in the government's ability to reconstruct what occurred -- or concoct a credible account.

Retract the 14 silly rules
News, Editorial, Published on 06/08/2018
» In just a few days, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has taken a tonne of ridicule about new regulations for media coverage. A 14-point set of so-called guidelines was issued to the press on Friday, especially for photographers. They order news snappers to get prior approval for every set of photos, try to completely ban certain pictures, and even decree that those behind cameras dress better than at present. Some of the orders are more unethical than the actions they seek to regulate.

Religious abuse perils
News, Editorial, Published on 15/08/2018
» Friday is the third anniversary of the worst single terrorist attack in modern Thailand. The poorly investigated, badly prosecuted bombing of the Erawan shrine killed 20 people and injured more than 100. The hurried police work concluded it was the act of foreigners angry at the government's success against human trafficking. The "foreigners" turned out to be Chinese Uighurs, two of whom were arrested and are still undergoing trial. The only known Thai suspect is on bail and her trial is officially pending, unofficially unlikely.

Clues scarce in the South
News, Editorial, Published on 02/01/2019
» Police, the Royal Thai Armed Forces and various security agencies have brought a huge credibility gap to the new upsurge of violence in the deep South. As of now, depending on which official has taken the podium, the bombings including the severing of Songkhla's iconic mermaid are political and non-political, either the work of separatist bandits or not, and have either a national or local motive -- but not both. Over the weekend, the Fourth Army commander said it might be local politicians, which seems a head-shaker.
