Apathy reigns as Thailand continues to fail to embrace its potential

Database, Don Sambandaraksa, Published on 06/01/2010

» After so many years of writing, I have ended up with a 'why bother' attitude when it comes to the more controversial news which should matter. Anyone remember the not-very-smart ID cards that cost 888 million baht and which, to this day, are not fully utilised?

    Children on the margins

Outlook, Vasana Chinvarakorn, Published on 07/01/2010

» There is light in the eyes of these children as they laugh. It shines out of the darkness that surrounds them. Under the fluorescent glare, the youngsters are giggling or convulsing with laughter at the performances of their peers. One by one, they take turns staging one-of-a-kind shows - shadow and hand puppetry, a live theatre and singing skit, and even traditional ethnic Shan dances during which some appreciative audience members present the amateur performers with small cash gifts. The memorable night will no doubt be cherished by the youths for years to come. It's a rare opportunity for the 30 stateless children in Chiang Mai to spend three days learning the basics of art and producing this unique "festival" together.

    Database, Published on 20/01/2010

» Your TOT board put huge red Xs across all the recent auctions and three billion baht worth of contracts to build a fibre-optic network for broadband Internet, and vowed to call new contracts; the decision followed remarks by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva over the high prices of some of the bids, and your TOT will be certain to write new terms of reference for new auctions; the rather complicated auction was run in portions, for various parts of the country, but luckily for TOT turned out to total 3.03 billion baht, a full 0.01 billion below the budget; now they will have to do it all again, and despite what Mr Abhisit says, prices do go up, don't they?

Using existing networks to run 3G is too much like common sense

Database, Don Sambandaraksa, Published on 03/03/2010

» 3G auctions for the rest of us before the end of this year? Should we rejoice at the progress that the four new Knights of Truffle and Cupcake, sorry, National Telecommunication Commissioners, have made, or is one to despair at the naivete that such talk brings? The problem is not so much about pushing ahead with 3G, but what to do with the existing 2G infrastructure.

    All up in the air

    Database, Published on 03/03/2010

» The most efficient and honoured minister of Information and Communications Technology in more than a year asked Chinese companies if they could design a satellite to replace the original Thaicom One; the request, signed by the Defence Ministry as well as by Ranongruk Suwanchwee herself, would call a Chinese-designed bird a Thai name, and use it to replace the satellite that Shin Corp, now of Shingapore, refuses to replace; assuming the Chinese are willing (haha) to design a satellite and deal with the canny minister, it remains to be seen whether they also would like to build, fit, launch and perhaps maintain the bird, and how that would fit in with the Defence Ministry's contention since September, 2006, that foreigners should not be involved in Thai telecoms.

    More than just a list

Muse, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 10/04/2010

» Almost every movie lover knows the Oscar-winning film Schindler's List, which simplifies the true story of Oskar Schindler, the German industrialist and member of the Nazi party who saved the lives of more than 1,000 Jews by hiring them in his factories during World War II. Lists changed throughout the wartime. Yet, the official one is dated April 18, 1945, three weeks before the German army surrendered. Three copies are being kept in museums in Jerusalem, Washington D.C., and in Orange Country, New York. The only copy in private hands is now for sale for $2.2 million (71.4 million baht).
