    The fats and the furious

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 12/11/2021

» The classic American diner has been immortalised in pop culture and has reached far and wide, even making it to the shores of the Land of Smiles. While its menu staples like burgers and milkshakes aren't really hard to find here in Bangkok, Fats and Angry also leans heavily into the sights and sounds of a 50s era diner. I can't really say whether the menu stays true to its roots because I was not alive during then nor have I lived in the US, but what I can say is that I left the restaurant a little more fat and not at all angry.

    Lazy no more

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/09/2021

» Chinese-American takeaway probably evokes either memories or curiosity: memories for those who travelled or lived in the US and discovered American-Chinese takeaway as a delicious and affordable option; curiosity for those who have never set foot in the US but have seen those signature white boxes in films or TV shows.

    A fight on all fronts

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/08/2021

» It sucks that we are still in the throes of this pandemic, that people are suffering in all kinds of ways because of it, that incompetence rules the roost when it comes to handling the crisis and it sucks that we are still moaning about it. Though we at Guru have listed things to make lockdown bearable and listed how you could help those in need, it's time to hear from of some the city's professionals on how the state of things has affected their lives.

    A taste of the Philippines

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/10/2020

» Filipino cuisine is utterly delicious yet somewhat tricky because there are so many versions of each specific dish that you'll find all around. Take something like the well-known and beloved adobo, a dish that both Filipinos and non-Filipinos have fallen in love with. Adobo can be cooked with a variety of meats like chicken, pork and even squid, and depending on how you like it or if you're Filipino, how your mum or grandmother cooked it, you're used to adobo being dry and pasty or wet with a little bit of soup. There's not just one correct way to cook Filipino dishes so it may be difficult to please everyone. However, Viva Filipinas could be the restaurant in the City of Angels that changes all of that.

    From Mexico with Love

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 18/09/2020

» Mexican cuisine is no stranger to Bangkok, which is pretty cool when you think about the fact that Mexico is more than 15,000km away. Tacos, burritos and enchiladas are easily found all over the city so to have yet another resto adding to the already crowded arena may seem unwise. However, Tortilla Quemada is aiming to set itself apart from the rest of the fray by touting itself as serving authentic Mexican fare, and it wants nothing more than to prove itself to the residents of Bangkok.

    On a liquid diet

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/03/2020

» Unless you're really health-conscious, on a cleanse or you're watching your weight, vegetable juices probably aren't your drink of choice. After all, they're not necessarily appetising. The taste of most vegetable juices take getting used to and after making numerous faces because of the odd tastes, you may start enjoying them. However, that's not the case for Paak. In fact, they may be the reason you start drinking vegetable beverages on a regular basis.

    Welcome to Jap-Am

» Tokiojo's location over at the student-hub of Samyan Mitrtown is a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" situation. It may not be too big, but at the risk of sounding provocative, size doesn't matter when the place gives off some cool, urban Tokyo street-side vibes.

    Juicy, juicy buns

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/02/2020

» A famous "poet" once said, "I don't want none unless you got buns, hon." I changed it up a bit to make it a little more PG but the adage rings true, and Better Burger is serving up hamburgers complete with soft buns, great flavour and incredibly juicy patties.

    Canadian deliciousness

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 31/01/2020

» O Canada! It seems like the more we know about you, the more awesome you become. Home of free healthcare, the most handsome prime minister ever and the kindest people on earth -- and I haven't even mentioned the fact that you're the geniuses that came up with the idea of smothering gravy all over fresh hot fries and also topping it off with cheese curds. While Thailand is a long-shot away from Canada, we're fortunate to get a little taste of the North American country in the form of arguably their best export next to Celine Dion's albums and Ryan Reynolds' talent: Tim Hortons.
