    Widescreen memories

Brunch, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 20/01/2019

» Ever since I embarked on this music-criticism journey some five years ago, it's always been a personal mission of mine to be as diverse as possible when it comes to the albums I choose to review. While I'd like to think that mainstream and independent/left-field artists are equally given a chance to shine in this column, there's still a whole world of music out there that needs its due recognition. Which brings me to drummer-turned-piano virtuoso Eiko Ishibashi, a celebrated Japanese musician who, thanks to US-based label Drag City, is getting her releases outside of her native Japan.

    Anger is an energy

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 17/08/2018

» It takes Trent Reznor 45 minutes to say hello. He voices his surprise that it's taken his band Nine Inch Nails nearly 30 years to do a show in Thailand. They almost made it in 2014 for the aborted Silverlake Festival in Pattaya, cancelled due to the volatile political climate, so there was no small amount of anticipation ahead of their show at Bangkok's packed Moonstar Studio on Tuesday night.

    Her soul is immortal

Life, John Clewley, Published on 21/08/2018

» Singer, composer, social activist and "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin died last week. She was 76 years old. I was spinning vinyl last week at a DJ night when the news filtered through. I didn't have any of her music with me but nonetheless let everyone know that one of the greats had gone; cue to clubbers quickly searching on their smart phones for news on the First Lady of Soul.

    Top 20 singles of 2017

    Brunch, Published on 31/12/2017

» Congratulations! You've made it to through 2017, a rather challenging year characterised by a series of unfortunate events from the rise of Alt-Right and the Weinstein effect to devastating hurricanes and starving polar bears. We've also lost a handful of musicians along the way -- Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Tom Petty, to name but a few. Thankfully, those who are still alive and kicking have served up some of the most memorable tunes we've had the pleasure of hearing this year. Handpicked from our Playlists over the last 12 months, here are the top 20 singles that have soundtracked and defined the year that was. This week we're picking up where we left off last week with the remaining tracks. And before we close up the shop, let's once again pat ourselves on the back, for 2017 was no child's play by any standards. May you have strength and courage to wade through Trump's tweets and Prayut's tantrums in the coming year.

    Putting the Fun in Funk

Brunch, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 17/12/2017

» Mention the name Notapol "Kor" Srichomkwan and most people would still have no idea who he is. To the local music industry, however, Kor is a bit of a legend. Having had started out as a bassist for alt-rock mainstay Moderndog, he went on to do some great things -- the most notable being co-founding pop-rock outfit POP alongside Nop Ponchamni and Montien Keawgamnoed, spearheading beloved disco-funk quartet Groove Riders as well as supergroup The Ghost Cat.
