» Publications are always so keen on naming the top-whatever cities to live in or visit. We don't normally bother with such trivial and arbitrary lists, but we're tired of these articles completely overlooking the benefits of Bangkok. When talking about our fair city, people often (and unfairly) think of only two things -- traffic and the blasphemous industry of which we don't speak because we're a Buddhist country so we pretend it doesn't exist. That has to end. This week, we give you 10 reasons why living in Bangkok should be everyone's dream.

» There's one part of higher education in Thailand we can confidently say is more impressive and challenging than that of any other country -- our graduation ceremonies. It's every Thai parent's dream to see their grown kids suffer through at least two full days -- dress rehearsal and the actual commencement -- of outdoor photo shoots while dressed in elaborate uniforms, plus the gown, props and an inhuman amount of make-up and hairspray. Did I mention that we're in a tropical country where it is pretty much the scorching summer year-round?!
What's that in the sky?

» Earlier this month, a mysterious green flash fell from the heavens, for a few seconds turning the night sky into day. As dash-camera footage of the phenomenon surfaced, a frenzy of questions erupted -- questions that were, unfortunately, met with shrugs and bewilderment. So the people turned to Guru for answers. And sure enough, we have them. All 10 of them.

» Nova Contemporary Gallery's inaugural exhibition, "Today is the Day: The Proposition of our Future", is a poignant exposition on the aftermath of Fukushima, told collectively through the multimedia works of 10 artists. Renowned Japanese film artist Ryusuke Ito is among the batch of voices and contributes to the collection an evocative installation you'd need to appreciate for a few minutes from multiple angles. Originally titled "All Things Considered", Ito's piece is a video installation capturing a replica of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant's interior as well as the inside of a Japanese person's apartment -- seemingly tranquil, but in reality, narrative of livelihoods arrested by disaster.

» Tests are supposed to measure what we know, or, more accurately, what we don't know but should know. That's why it's problematic when we're passing exams but failing in the real life situations those exams sought to mimic. This could easily be alluding to the shape of our national education in general, but we're directing our frustration to a specifically aggravating application of skill in this country: driving.

Kookai — Piyapattra Chaimahawong — is one former-Bangkokian who took the road less-travelled. » If you've ever sourced any basic kitchenware from Central, you may own something of Scanproducts and not even know it. Established 20 years ago as a premium Danish homeware company in Thailand, Scanproducts has in recent years come out with local brand that is more relatable to this country's middle class homemakers. We had a chat with the company's founder, Danish fellow Jens Viggo Bergsoe, to learn more about "local brand by Scanproducts", the climate surrounding home décor in Thailand and a bit of his personal life, which only furthers the Scandinavian reputation for being model people.
